Interesting times here this past weekend.

Two days into spring break, five area teens were killed in an early morning (1 AM) single-vehicle wreck. Four of the five were 18 years old, and the 15 year old sister of one of the boys was also killed. According to the coroner, speed was a factor, alcohol was a probable factor, and drug paraphernalia was found in the truck.

Most of me is terribly sad for the families involved. But there's a part of me that doesn't feel quite so badly, considering how they died, and the time of night that it happened. What's happened to parental responsibility?
There was a rally at the State Capitol on Saturday. This is why I love living in Montana:

Seriously, I would not be surprised if there was a vendor nearby selling beer...
Symphony concert was quite wonderful, but not without tension. Not at the concert, but for the three days before. Without boring you with the details, suffice it to say that boards of directors of non-profits (particularly arts non-profits) need to keep their noses out of the operations. In my case, the concert. There was a great deal of bad blood being spewed, with the Board trying to bully their way. Ultimately, a compromise was reached, with the Board actually backing down, but it was like pulling teeth. I'm afraid we haven't heard the end of it all.
Did you know that Easter Sunday is next weekend? And April? How did that happen?

Jen & Larry

I hate to disappoint some of you, but there's no huge secret to the "8". But there is a story!

I've been doing this blogging thing for over five years, and HNT almost that long. There's been hundreds of people who come and go through this whole interwebz thing. Some pass through HNT literally unnoticed. Some have been around almost from the beginning. And some make a brief appearance, yet make lasting impressions.

Back in the old days, one such person made that impression. She went by the name of "VirgoJen". We followed her on her runs (that race up the skyscraper still sticks in my mind--40 flights of stairs!), her family, her divorce, and just about anything else she could come up with. And her HNT pictures were always quite sexy, without giving away the goods. And her smile--oh, that smile!

She closed down her blog a couple of years ago, though she had pretty much neglected it most of the year before that. She got heavily involved in photography, and started showing us her life over at Flickr. She got involved with the "365" project over there, which allowed us to see even more of her life than blogging did. She used Flickr as her pseudo-blog. So it was like she hadn't left at all. Then an unexpected thing happened. She met a guy...

I honestly can't say that I know the precise history, but I think they "met" on Flickr. He, too, has a thing for photography. They clicked (pun intended). She sort of introduced him to us in May, 2007. Now, almost 3 years later, they're getting married today (Friday) after a variety of twists and turns. Through it all, they've been able to keep their focus on this day.

As for the significance of the "8", it's better in her own words...
"Okay Facebook and Flickr friends...you all know (well those that "know" us) what "8" means to L and I. I would personally love if you could post an "8" photo of some sort on Friday. It would mean alot to me (us!). I want to make a slideshow!"
and another quote, when not everyone knew the significance...
"It's actually infinity, and it's quite a sweet and long story, but basically when we first met we would type it by using 8. We both got infinity tattoos as well. We still use it to this day... It's our "thing." :)"
So to Jen and Larry: Congratulations on this day! May the Force of "8" be with you!

"8" HNT

This week's picture may not make sense to many of you (if any), but it's by request. I won't go into details here, but I'll write about it on Friday. But it's got to do something with keeping your life in focus...

This week's Mystery Guest/birthday girl will be revealed late Thursday afternoon.

My apologies for not getting around to reveal the MG earlier...work/symphony caught me off-guard. Of course, the MG is Evening. Her blog is private, but you could probably leave a comment here requesting an invite. I'm sure she'd see it! Happy Birthday, young lady!

Still continuing to get some great submissions from your fellow HNTers over at "...the Other HNT". You should go check them out. Be sure to leave some comment love over there, too. And as usual...NSFW.
A new stop on the OsShirt tour has been documented. Be sure to check it out! Only a couple of more posts and it'll be almost current!

Blog Pimping and Other Selected Shorts

Stop by and check the blog that Cher started for the family chihuahua. If you've got a pet, or just love animals, this blog should tug at your heartstrings. Go down to the first post to read all about what's been going on. And then do what you can...
Got some sad news on Polt's site yesterday. For those of you who don't know him, he's one of the longest-running HNTers among us. He's hanging up his HNT camera after 4 full years (200+) of HNT. He rarely missed a week in all that time, and rewarded us with 2 HNTs the next week when he did. And not once did he show his privates. Very definitely one of the old-skool HNTers. Go check out his final regular HNT.
Did you see the OsShirt's appearance yesterday? Go visit Chickie to see it! I really do wish I had that shirt's life...
The University of Montana lost in the first round of the NCAA tournament tonight. The 14th-seeded Griz lost by 5 points to the third-seeded New Mexico Lobos, though the the lead was back and forth most of the night, and they were only down by one in the last two minutes. Well played, boys. Now I don't care about the rest of the tourney.
Speaking of tourneys...the Masters starts up in a few weeks. Despite my negative feelings towards him (long before his current tribulations), I'll go out on a limb right now and predict that Tiger's gonna win again this year. And I sorta hope he does.
The symphony played a youth concert this afternoon (which is the reason for my general absence here for the past couple of days). "Peter vs. the Wolf"--getting the Wolf's version of what happened in Prokofiev's "Peter and the Wolf". It's educational, and the kids love it, but I am totally beat. Quick set-ups/tear-downs and numerous changes to the stage. I should be in bed right now...
One of the best things about this concert is that the stage director (this was a stage show--the courtroom trial of the Wolf) was one of our lead singers from the band! We "retired" in Sept. of '07, and we both realized that we hadn't seen each other since then! She'd never seen me with the shaved head (and wasting away), and I hadn't seen her since she went from blond back to her natural brunette. We've promised that we won't go that long before seeing each other again. We even broached the subject of starting up a new band. Something to think about...
The "Great Formspring Experiment" seems to be a fizzle. The box is right over there in my sidebar. Ask me anything. Anonymously, even!
I miss my Irish-themed template already. I sort of liked the color scheme with the shades of green.

St. Patrick's Day HNT

I've always been one to celebrate my Irish heritage on St. Patrick's Day. In spite of not having that outward indication that I've got any Irish blood in me. No O'Hara or Flanagan or Faherty as my surname. The Irish part of my family comes from my mother's mother's family, so the surnames have gotten buried. The Milligans and the O'Hearns.

Sadly, I've never really dug into my heritage. Mom started years ago, and was able to go back a couple of generations, plus some references to being related to "John, the Warrior" from the 11th century. No one famous, that we could tell, but there were a couple of ministers that popped up.

I've always wanted to go to Ireland, though I'd have to do some real studying of my ancestors, so that I could really enjoy the history of my lineage. I'm hoping that, somehow, that lineage includes the Guinness family. To that end, I celebrate each year with my favorite Irish drink. And while I don't quite do the presentation as well as last year's SPD Mystery Guest, the sentiment's the same!

I hope that you all had a great St. Patrick's Day!

The Aries:

"Aries is the first sign of the western zodiac - untested, unsophisticated and genuine to a fault. Aries charges through life, bumping into obstacle after obstacle then getting bravely up, only to wonder where the lumps and scrapes and bruises came from."

This week's Mystery Guest will be revealed Thursday afternoon. It's her birthday this weekend too!

The birthday girl this weekend is Stealth, who's come back after a long time away. Stop by and wish her a happy birthday (Saturday)!

Something had to give way today amongst all the things going on (see my previous post), and "...the Other HNT" is it. It'll still be going up, but not until later tonight, and possibly not until after midnight sometime. But be sure to check it out! Your fellow HNTers would appreciate it! Definitely NSFW this week.

Another adventure of the OsShirt has been posted. It's slowly getting caught up over there!
I've got that "ask me a question" thingie over there in my sidebar. So much easier than coming up with a new meme! Try it out--it's anonymous, too!
As a special Irish treat, we've got a second Mystery Guest! Enjoy!

a day to begin transforming winter's dreams into summer's magic."

This week's second Mystery Guest will also be revealed on Thursday afternoon. But if you know her, you might be able to see her with even a little less green!

This Irish lass is Minority Report! Be sure you stop by her place too!

Happy St. Patrick's Day!

If all goes as planned, I'll be sitting at O'Toole's at 8:00 this morning. Continuing my nearly 20 year (with only a couple of misses) tradition of getting the first green beer out of the tap. In years past, that's also meant that I was really in no condition to go to work, but my bosses are cool that way. Of course, they put the beer down pretty well themselves! But this year, I'll have a limit of 2 green beers. No shots of Jameson or Bushmills. No Guinness or Killian's Red. Damned new lifestyle puts a crimp in that.

Just as well, since I've got a symphony move, including loading the truck before heading to O'Toole's. And heading back to set things up after work. And rehearsing until about 10:30 into the night. No reason to go through the day in an alcoholic haze (though that hasn't stopped me in the past).

But I'll be wearin' the green. My Irish heritage allows me to do that. I'll have Pandora tuned to "Irish Pub Favorites". I'll try to sneak in some corned beef and cabbage. I love St. Patrick's Day! May the luck of the Irish be with all of you!
Had a great link emailed to me from my boss yesterday. For those of you with iPhones, be sure to check this out. "Thirty Super Secret iPhone Features and Shortcuts". There's some great stuff here that I'd never known about. Some of them are fairly popular. But most of them were new to me, and based on the comments on the site, new to most people. Why doesn't Apple publish these things?
Got a different email yesterday from Cher (remember her?--and no, not that Cher...). There's been a terrible thing that's happened to her sister's dog. A cute little chihuahua. Yeah, it's a request for a donation, but when you go to the site she's set up, you can hardly say no. At least stop by to check it out.
As mentioned above, it's a busy day in the land of O'sbasso (like the Irishness of that? geez...it must be late). I won't have computer access for most of the day, but HNT will be scheduled at its regular time. OHNT, however, will not go up until sometime after midnight, since I get so many submissions on Wednesdays. But fear not! It'll be there!

Random stuff

I suppose I should write something... As mentioned before, inspiration has been lacking over the past few weeks. Anyone know exactly what an "ides" is??
My week is shot to hell this week due to symphony duties. Enjoying the St. Patrick's Day festivities will be curtailed this year because of it (and some due to the diabetes). But I do plan on being at O'Toole's to get the first green beer out of the tap again! Just have to limit myself to two beers and NO whiskey shots. Then I have to load in for a rehearsal. We're performing a youth concert for all the 4th/5th graders in town on Thursday. Then I have to pack the whole production up an move to a local church for rehearsals for next week's concert. Like I said, the week's shot to hell.
My Grizzlies made it to the Dance! They won the conference playoffs to earn an automatic bid. Unfortunately, my interest in the basketball team is fairly low. I couldn't even tell you what their record is. But they have a somewhat easier bracket this year than in previous years that they've made it (no Duke or KY or any of the powerhouse teams in the first round). Unlikely that they'll make it to the Sweet Sixteen, but I'll be sure to brag if they do!
I finally broke down and bought my plane ticket to NYC last week! That's for BTExpress' pool party in August. All the travel sites said that deals could be had through the end of the weekend, so I figured I'd better jump on them. Still pricey, as anything out of MT is, but better price than if I'd bought them last fall. So it's on, boys and girls!
Speaking of Irish...the pictures in the header are from the most Irish movie ever made, "The Quiet Man". Starring John Wayne and Maureen O'Hara, and directed by John Ford. Must be watched every March.
Have you checked out the new adventures of the OsShirt?

The Soft Blue Glow HNT

I'm not sure what happened, but I woke up on Saturday like a man possessed. After taking care of the morning man-ritual, I walked into my back room. Ah, the back room... In other apartments, it would be known as the master bedroom. Not that it's that big, but far more room than the second bedroom. Where others might have seen where to put their bed and nightstands and how to arrange the walk-in closet, I saw music room!! I have collected mucho crap in that regard. I have a spinet piano and two electric pianos in there. And a synthesizer. And my entire desktop set-up so that I could use my music programs to write fantastic arrangements for the band. And still had room to spare for a small desk, a small bookcase and elbow room to use it as a practice room. And the closet could hold my file cabinets, my boxed-up LPs, and all the stuff that I'd collected professionally from my teaching days.

As the years have gone by, the room has changed. The pianos are still there, but they're not used (the main drawback to apartment living--no chance to bang on the piano as stress relief). The fake Christmas tree is in its box on top of a microwave cart that I somehow inherited. Stacks of papers that should be in file cabinets that I've never gotten around to organizing. More little bits of furniture from the family that has somehow made it to me because they think I might be able to use it, rather than get rid of it for $10 at the spring garage sale. Think "Hoarders", but not quite that bad. And the iMac that has been pretty much unused since buying the laptop in 2007. It's much more efficient to surf the web in the living room using wireless while I'm sort of watching TV. As a result of all this, my music room became the storage room.

Back to Saturday... I walked in for some reason, and it just hit me. I had to clean that room out. Ignore the fact that it was going to be a gloriously nice day outside--I wasn't going to leave the apartment until that room was clean! I went to the store to buy some milk. ON SUNDAY AFTERNOON!

It's simultaneously disgusting and uplifting to do a major overhaul like that. I packed away instruments. I found long-lost treasures. I tossed stuff out that day that, on any other day, I would have kept. I went through 3 different cleaning rags. I took three garbage bags out to the dumpster. I made no headway into the closet, though. Baby steps, people. Baby steps!

But best of all, I've reacquainted myself with my iMac. It's been far too long. My Powerbook and I have been having issues with each other, primarily because it's just gotten filled up. And no, it's not dirty pictures! So I fired her back up, got her loaded with all the pertinent updates, and have been spending more time in the back room with her. I even bought a new router for her!

I've decided that I'm going to become a two-computer geek at home. Pictures and music, as well as blogpage work will stay on the iMac. Chatting and surfing (for the most part) will be on the Powerbook. Hopefully this will work out well. I did find out Tuesday night while uploading OHNTs that I prefer to work in a dark room, with only the glow of the screen lighting the room. And it offered the opportunity for some new pics!

This week's Mystery Guest has chosen to not reveal herself this week. But if you might be able to find her somewhere else!

There's some great pictures over at "...the Other HNT" this week (just like any other!). You guys are getting better about leaving comments. Thanks! I've been hearing back from some of them with their appreciation. Keep it up! Also as usual...NSFW!
You may have noticed that I put up one of those Formspring thingies over there in my sidebar. It's a way to anonymously (or not) ask me questions. I won't answer them here. You'll have to click the link for the answers. I've been less than inspired here recently, so hopefully someone might spark an interesting topic. And please...try to come up with something more original than a sex question. I'd like to think you guys are a tad more cerebral than that!
You might check out the OsShirt site, too! The shirt is apparently planning its summer schedule, and should be seen around a good number of blogs soon. The blogsite is still behind, but catching up! Should be current by the middle of Spring, though!

Roy G. Biv HNT

As any good kid in school knows, the title is the mnemonic for the colors of the rainbow. Or, in a broader sense, the sequence of hues in the visible spectrum, in order from longest to shortest wavelength. Sir Isaac Newton came up with the colors, originally only five, but adding orange and indigo to come up with seven, which matched the musical notes of a major scale. But, as usual, I've strayed from the path here...

It's only early March, and I know there's at least one more good snowstorm to dump on us, but it's hard not to think of spring. I'll save the overly optimistic "springtime" post for a later, more appropriate date, but let me just say that it's been really nice here this week. I think it started during my symphony days last week, where I was stuck inside all day. No, the trees haven't started budding or anything like that, but the temperatures have been in the mid-50s range since Sunday. After a winter of bitter cold that we had, that's a nice change.

(Stick with me here...I'll get back around to Roy...) In my living room window, which faces due east, I still have a snowflake ornament hanging. I only found that out when I opened the drapes on Sunday to let in the glorious sunshine we've been getting. It's a cheap plastic, but sentimental thing, and it's got six crystal hanging around a larger center crystal. All of which act as prisms, bouncing their miniature rainbows off the walls. I remember back about 3-4 years ago when a particular lady (hi, Samantha!) did a series of HNT pics with the rainbows in her living room. Aha! I could do the same thing (but not look near as good). So I plotted for a Tuesday morning photoshoot...

Well, this is one of those great ideas that just didn't work out. Tuesday morning was slightly overcast, so the mini-spectrums that appeared just weren't that well-defined. The plan was to take a picture of them somewhere on my body, turn it black & white, and then bring out just the rainbow colors. Couldn't even do that. I did learn some things, however, and hopefully sometime in the future I'll give it another attempt. In the meantime, imagine a rainbow on my cheek, just under my eye. It's there. Really!

"Like a flower
Waiting to bloom
Like a light bulb
In a dark room
I'm just sitting here waiting for you
To come on home and turn me on

Like the desert waiting for the rain
Like a school kid waiting for the spring
I'm just sitting here waiting for you
To come on home and turn me on

My poor heart
It's been so dark
Since you've been gone
After all your the one who turns me off
You're the only one who can turn me back on

My hi-fi's waiting for a new tune
My glass is waiting for some fresh ice cubes
I'm just sitting here waiting for you
To come on home and turn me on
Turn me on"

"Turn me on"~~Norah Jones

This week's Mystery Guest turns 35 Thursday! She's back to blogging and HNT after being away for far too long. Helpful hints--she's Canadian, she's a photographer, and a lover of winter sports. She'll be revealed Thursday afternoon!
Our Canadian birthday girl is Phynixbell, one of our long lost HNTers from way back when! Be sure to stop by and check out her new digs (and new cars!). She'll be back in the full swing of things soon! And don't forget the birthday wishes!

We're getting some newer participants over at "...the Other HNT", along with some of the more regular ones. Be sure to stop by and leave a comment or two! I know they appreciate it! Oh, yeah--it's NSFW.

I know that many of you only stop by once a week, which is fine, so let me take this opportunity to direct you over to the OsShirt site. New posts have gone up this week (after being neglected for over a year!). And why is it getting started up again? Because the OsShirt (v.3.0) is making the rounds again! Go check it out. If you've never been there, start at the bottom and work your way up to get the full history! I'll keep going until I get it current!

Olympics 'n Things

Not sure why I watched as much Olympic coverage as I did, but I think I watched just about every day (except the days I was busy with symphony stuff). Interestingly, I didn't catch the US/Canada hockey match until the last two minutes of regulation. Which, of course, was the best time to jump in! And as usual, I have a couple of thoughts...

Ice Dancing--most of the pairs seemed to be lusting for each other on the ice, and frankly, looked good doing it. Until they mentioned that there were numerous brother/sister pairs in the competition. Not sure how I feel about that, but it made me a little uncomfortable... (but the Kerr siblings from Great Britain did nicely!).

Curling--U.S. men certainly choked. And Canada's female skip, Cheryl Bernard is certainly bendy!

If you didn't shed a couple of tears during/after Joannie Rochette's short program, you're either a big fat liar, or a cold heartless person.

Did you see Lindsey Vonn (and other US Olympians) in Sports Illustrated swimsuit edition? Whew!

I thought the Closing Ceremonies, which rarely match the pageantry of the opening ceremonies, were well done. I thought they were humorous, a bit PG rated for the IOC, and starting them by bringing in the handyman to fix the fourth leg was great! But I think that not having Bob & Doug McKenzie around to take part was a mistake...

I also can't believe that British Columbia native Diana Krall wasn't part of the musical talent. What a shame!

NBC continues to show its incompetence. Breaking out of the ceremonies to show off their new show "The Marriage Ref"??? Apparently those in charge at NBC are completely intimidated by comedians whose egos need to be stroked. And yet, they allow Bob Costas to continue on, even embarrassing himself as a piano "player"? The only consolation we get out of NBC is that we don't have to listen to Brent Musberger!
We had our symphony concert on Saturday night. Not the most exciting for me (I just don't care for Brahms...), but the Shostakovich piano concerto was spectacular (in spite of not using any trumpets or trombones. Odd for a good Russian). No injuries or blood, for those keeping score, though our soloist had a stomach flu. But the show must go on!
Time for a bit of honesty and introspection. How many of you followed the news coverage of the tsunami warnings on Saturday? And how many of you were just a tad disappointed by the lack of destruction by the tsunami when it hit Hawaii?
There's a new remake of "Clash of the Titans". Is that really necessary? How can you do better than Laurence Olivier, Maggie Smith, Ursula Andress, Burgess Meredith or Harry Hamlin??? Or the wonderful stop-action special effects of Ray Harryhausen? The only "name" in the new version is Liam Neeson, and the the effects will all be CGI. Depressing.
Same thing goes with the remake coming out of "Nightmare on Elm Street". Though the role of Freddy will be played by Jackie Earle Haley, the kid who played Kelly Leak in the original "Bad News Bears" (another one badly remade). Always wondered whatever happened to him!
A couple of items relating to the OsShirt. There's a couple of short posts on the OsShirt site. Trying to get caught up after a couple of years away. Why the sudden interest in getting it going again? Because 13 Messages posted a couple of pictures with it (including a special guest, too!). And I understand that it's now on it's way to an undisclosed location in Florida! Be sure to check both links! I'm certain we're going to be seeing more of it in the weeks ahead!

Best I've got time for HNT

I'm not sure how it happened, but things have been unexpectedly busy in the land of Os. Well, that's not quite true...the failings and miscommunications of others has a lot to do with it, and of course it all gets to trickle down on me. I'm not sure if I like it when others trickle on me. Actually, I'm pretty sure I don't. But I've strayed from the path here...

I'm currently writing this during a quick break at work. I don't even have a picture taken yet. I was up until about 2AM last night fixing the aforementioned miscommunications. To have ready for a 9AM staff meeting. Naptime won't be taken today. Symphony moves, rehearsals and performance through Sunday. Then a quick turnaround for our March concert.

No time to chat--I think some of my regulars think I've abandoned them. No time to get some personal things taken care of. No time to enjoy the near springlike weather we're beginning to get. Unfortunately, I sort of thrive on it. Still, I miss my peeps...

Apparently, I'm not the only one busy this month. Sorry--no Mystery Guest this week.
But those who like to show a bit more of themselves found the time! Some newer people showing up over at "...the Other HNT". Be sure to check them out, and leave them some comments, OK? Of course, NSFW!
I certainly hope that most of you come back here after a day or two and check out the late commenters for HNT. If not, you're missing out on some great posts/blogs! You won't be disappointed!
On a more solemn note...BTExpress has posted a small tribute to his girlfriend's (Lori's) dad, who died last week. Be sure to stop by and check it out.

Winter Olympics HNT

Once again, I pick a theme that seems like such a good idea. Right up to the point where I have to come up with my own. In spite of growing up in Montana, I don't do any of the typical winter sports, namely skiing, skating, or hunting. Snowboarding wasn't invented yet when I was a kid, and hockey is sort of an unknown around here. Needless to say, my lack of winter play sort of implies that I really don't have any winter sports gear, either.

Then it hit me! Back in the dark ages of TV, BCTV (Before Cable TV), we were able to get programming from Calgary. Can't remember the call letters, and it appears that they might have changed them. But it was like the early WTBS, but from Canada. Broadcasting to all of Canada and nearby states. We could watch the Calgary Stampede...live! And there was wrestling. And roller derby!!! But every Saturday afternoon, we would sit entranced and in awe, watching curling!

Ah, curling... Sort of like bowling--you can drink beer, anyone can play, and the facilities needed to house the sport are generally huge. In this case, cold, too. The sport is thought to have originated in Scotland, at about the same time that golf appeared, too. There are those who would argue the "sports" aspect of it. Granted, I doubt that many curlers spend hours upon hours in the weight room. But by the same token, there are numerous sports that don't require strength as much as they do precision, strategy, a light touch, teamwork and relatively inexpensive equipment!

We don't have much in the way of hockey rinks in this state, let alone curling centers. So if we want to attempt curling here, we have to do it the old fashioned way. Say, clearing the snow off the back sidewalk, exposing the 4 inches of ice that have formed underneath. Which is easy to do when your sport requires a broom (I miss the days of using actual brooms, rather than the high tech squeegee they use now...). Of course, in Montana, we generally have to do it at night, seeing as how we play it half-nekkid (gotta keep the shoes on...ice is damned cold!!)!

"She ain't into wine and roses
Beer just makes her turn up her nose
And, she can't stand the thought of sippin' champagne
No Cuervo Gold Margaritas
Just ain't enough good burn in tequila
She needs somethin' with a little more edge and a little more pain
She's my little whiskey Girl
My Ragged-on-the-edges girl
Ah, but I like 'em rough..."

Whiskey Girl ~ Toby Keith

Truth be known, this week's Mystery Guest is actually a big fan of beer, beef jerky, and has an affection for añejo tequila. But that doesn't change the fact that she's smokin'! A cigar, even! She'll be revealed on Thursday afternoon, but if you know who it is, be sure to stop by and hi!

BTW--I don't have anyone lined up for next week...

This week's MG is the fun-loving Roxy over at Westcoast Weirdo. Stop by to say hi (hint!--click on her HNT tab at the top of her page)!

Some good submissions over at "...the Other HNT" this week. Definitely NSFW. Be sure to stop by and support your fellow HNTers with some comment lovin'!
I don't think I mentioned this before...I had my 3-month appointment with the doctor last week. Basically, in my condition, there's three main things that I need to have under control--blood pressure, blood glucose and cholesterol. Well, my BP is good, my glucose levels are excellent, and the cholesterol is excellent! Other than that whole diabetes thing, I'm as healthy as a horse! Actually, I need to work on the weight and exercise, but even at that, I'm doing more for it than I have ever have before! So it looks like I'll be sticking around for awhile!
Symphony concert coming up next weekend, meaning all sorts of meetings and rehearsals until then. I might be sparse over the next ten days...nothing personal!

Thoughts

I have to admit...I've already watched more of the Olympics than I thought I would, and pretty much more than I ever do. Some notes:
  • Interesting that, back in August of 2008, I wrote this as part of the Summer Games opening ceremonies in Beijing: "Bob Costas is an ass." Certainly hasn't changed. Of course, this is NBC, who has kept Jay Leno around far too long too.
  • Glad that that NBC broadcast the luge accident, and equally glad that they have chosen not to show it again. Should be easy to find on YouTube, but the spammers are fully aware of it. Severely low class...
  • REALLY upset that even though I'm only one time zone away, we're not get the live broadcast. So as everyone cheers and is excited on Facebook, the surprise is shot. Of course, if I wasn't on Facebook, I wouldn't know, would I? Glad I'm not on Twitter!
  • Didn't realize that there were two (at least) Montanans competing. I'm sure there's probably more, but I find it interesting that there's been virtually no mention of them in the local media. Or maybe there has--I so rarely read local news...

I guess there was a basketball game and a car race today too. Neither of which I could care less about.
I was highly disappointed in the "We Are the World" remake. Yet that would imply that I had any sort of expectation. Really...Barbra Streisand? The only country artist on the official roster was Zac Brown. Carlos Santana, who should have been on the first one, was kept in the sound booth. About 60 people who I've never heard of. Brian Wilson was on the list. I think they kept him in the back row with the old farts. Speaking of old farts, Tony Bennett was there, but he's cool again, so that's OK. It was good to see Jeff Bridges playing the role of Dan Aykroyd this time around. The first time around, they raised over $60M for African relief. I doubt they'll hit $20M this time.
THEME ALERT! - Don't forget that next week will be the Winter Olympic HNT theme! For those of you who worried about not having snow for pictures, I think that's been taken care of... If you still don't have snow, you could always opt for indoor skating, or medal ceremonies, or something along those lines. Looking forward to seeing what you all come up with! Canadians--I'm looking forward to some real national pride!!!

Someone made mention on a comment somewhere how "adorable" it was to see all the southerners posting pictures of their snow. Yeah. That's the word I'd use!
Apparently, when one is snowbound by the 5 inches of snow outside, they spend time playing with Photoshop. Q sent this to me. Pretty much the story of my life... thanks Q!

Happy Valentine's Day!

This isn't the version I was looking for, and neither of these guys individually do I care for, but this song is, by far, the finest Valentine's Day song ever. Extremely intimate, a tad humorous, and one of my favorite songs of all time. If you're interested, you can check out the Michelle Pfeiffer version (surprisingly good!), the Tom Jones version, the Miles Davis version, or the Sarah Vaughan version. Happy Valentine's Day everyone!

Cupid's Helper HNT

I think I might be the only male on the planet who actually likes Valentine's Day. Of course, being a life-long, card-carrying member of the Bachelor's Club might have a lot to do with that. I don't have to send cards, flowers or chocolate to anyone if I don't want to. Nor have to worry about the consequences by not doing so. Yet, I've been known to do such things, because deep down, I'm sort of a romantic.

Strangely, I've had so few special VDays, but there's only one that sticks out in my mind. I answered a 'help wanted' ad in the local paper to deliver flowers on Valentine's Day. I put on my reddest shirt (avoiding the urge to go the full Cupid route) and headed to the florist early that morning. For over 8 hours that day, my fellow delivery guys and I ran all over town, delivering roses to nervous, expectant ladies. Fill up my van, head to the downtown office buildings, deliver maybe a dozen orders, and go back to do the whole thing all over again.

Never in my life had I felt such love and contempt at the same time. The anticipation as I walked into an office area. The hopeful look in their eyes. The daggers in my back as I passed desk after desk, to deliver them to the back of the office. The leers and pure hate I felt walking back out of the office. Sometimes I'd have to go back to the same office with a different order. And the forgiving eyes, then the anticipation, daggers, and leers. Repeat. Rinse. Repeat.

It was a great day. My van smelled like roses for days. I'm curious what sort of reaction I would have gotten if I went the Cupid route. Fortunately, not that curious... Happy Valentine's Day to all!

Please Hear What I Am Not Saying

"Don't be fooled by me.
Don't be fooled by the face I wear
for I wear a mask, a thousand masks,
masks that I'm afraid to take off,
and none of them is me.

Pretending is an art that's second nature with me,
but don't be fooled,
for God's sake don't be fooled.
I give you the impression that I'm secure,
that all is sunny and unruffled with me, within as well
as without,
that confidence is my name and coolness my game,
that the water's calm and I'm in command
and that I need no one,
but don't believe me.

Who am I, you may wonder?
I am someone you know very well.
For I am every man you meet
and I am every woman you meet."

Charles C. Finn
September 1966

The mystery will be revealed late Thursday afternoon. Be sure to come back--it'll be a surprise!
I'll assume that you noticed that there might be double Mystery Guests this week (hint: mouse rollover). Our Guests are Barefoot Dreamer and Morning Glory, who's also doing a guest stint at her site! Be sure to stop by and say hi!

My mini-rant from last week regarding the lack of comments for "...the Other HNT" seemed to work some. Now keep it up! Your fellow HNTers appreciate it! Oh, yeah...NSFW!
Ending with bullets...
  • I have no sympathy for those of you who are enduring the snow back east. In the similar fashion that no one had great sympathy for us here when we were deep in the frigid sub-zero temps. But after seeing the news tonight, I CAN say that I'm glad it's not happening here. In fact, I saw a robin the other day. Don't hate...
  • Congrats to the New Orleans Saints! Mardi Gras should be a good time this year!
  • Getting used to the new changes that Facebook made this week. Not a big fan, but it's not too bad. Still seems to be working a bit on the wonky side.
  • REALLY not a fan yet of Gmail's Buzz. Do we really need Twitter-like behavior there?? Or worse--connecting Twitter to Buzz??? Please, no. I'm going to give it a couple of days, but there's a nice link at the bottom of your Gmail page that says "turn off buzz". Probably going to do just that!
  • Had the most bizarre dream last night. Can't quite describe it, other than I was a game piece on a board that was a hybrid of Tetris and Words with Friends. Yes, the dementia rolls on unabated...

Wasting Away HNT

This week's HNT is sort of a result of last week's click-through. I haven't talked much about the weight loss due to my pissing it all away last year. At my first doctor's appointment, when I was officially diagnosed, I had dropped about 50 lbs. from the middle of the summer. It was fairly sudden, though looking back on it, happened over the span of many weeks. While I was still having to digest what lifestyle changes I had to make, I was somewhat happy with the fact that I lost weight, regardless of how I did it.

My four days in the hospital were spent pumping all sorts of fluids in me, which added about 10 lbs back. And made me healthier. Since then, part of my goal to get off the insulin is to lose weight. And there's been progress, though slow. I haven't lost it as quickly as I'd like, but I've been losing, and I consider that a step in the right direction. I'm back to about 50 lbs less than this summer, but 50 lbs is also relative. Everybody goes ooh and ahh when they read about a man who once weighed over 1000 lbs and has lost 600 lbs. But he still weighs 400 lbs. Not that my numbers are remotely close to that, but the story is still similar. I'm still a big guy.

I don't let that bother me at all. At my heaviest, I never really let it bother me. But I have to admit that I like how I'm feeling/looking. Which is a nice motivation. Yeah, someone who's never met me might have one image of me; others who have followed me through this are noticing the weight loss. And I'm determined to keep it coming off. I might even join a gym (though nobody should hold me to that...).

Where it's been most noticeable has been my face. I've noticed it. Many of you have noticed it too. That's where last week's HNT comes into play. I knew there were some other pictures of me playing Michelle. It's an interesting comparison. So here I am in 2005, 2007 (during Mahler's 3rd--I can guarantee I'm blowing my brains out!), and just last week. Yeah. I'm losing weight.

"May you have warm words
on a cold evening,
A full moon on a dark night,
And the road downhill
all the way to your door."

--Traditional Irish blessing/toast

This blessing goes out to this week's Mystery Guest. She has moved into a new place, away from her kids and their father to start a new chapter in her life. As part of that new chapter, she's also moved her blog to her own domain. Not just a figurative move, but a financially strategic move. But she needs your help. So, in a different twist on the "mystery" part, I'm revealing her now, so that you can get over to read her post and help out. Now head over to "Having My Cake...and eating it too!" She'll appreciate your help!
I have a little gripe regarding "...the Other HNT". Lord knows I'm not a comment whore. I used to get down when comments were lacking. I checked obsessively to see what my stats told me. I worried that I wasn't doing something "right". But that was when I was young and foolish.

I've noticed over the past few weeks that the comments over at OHNT have fallen drastically. I checked my stats, and there's still the same number of people visiting. But almost no one is commenting. What's up with that?? Your fellow HNTers are stepping out over there, and I'm sure they'd like some feedback, even if they're anonymous! So go check them out and leave some lovin'! Of course, it's NSFW, but you already knew that!
Theme Alert! - The Winter Olympics will be in full swing in two weeks, so why not celebrate your national pride with a Winter Olympics HNT? Even if you don't like the Winter Olympics, I'm sure that many of you have experienced some snow this year! That should get you in the mood! And if you're good, you can even incorporate some of it in your HNT! The Olympic theme worked well two years ago for the Summer Games--this one should do as well! So pull out your toques, lace up your skates, or whatever you need to do! Winter Olympics HNT in TWO weeks!

Snot Factory Running at Full Speed...and other news

Just thought I'd share...

DORKS 'R' US - I scored MAJOR 'cool uncle' points last week! N1 and I got together for dinner and beers before "Jesus Christ Superstar". And I love being able to say that! And she drinks dark beer! She makes her uncle proud (tears starting to form in my eye...). The show was phenomenal, as I expected. Mostly a different cast than when I saw it a couple of years ago, but Ted Neely (the award winning actor who played Jesus in the original movie) was still plugging away. The voice/stamina/enthusiasm are all going strong. Helping with the 'cool uncle' points was the fact that I scored two front row tickets. Center, of course. She was so impressed that she started checking out the movie clips from YouTube the next morning! All in all, a great evening!
Dementia is setting in - Follow me on this... Our bill for dinner and beers came to $30.90. Quite reasonable. I did a quick calculation in my head as to what a 15% tip would be. Just a hair over $4.50, so I rounded up to $4.80. And here's where the dementia raised its ugly head...I signed the slip for an even $48.00. A $17.10 tip on a $30.90 tab. That's 55%. The worst part...the waitress was average, and not even hot... Unfortunately, I did a similar thing when dining with Moose once. But quantities of wine were involved that night.
Mahler - The symphony concert went quite well, but not without accidents. Since you were wondering. Slipping on ice, jamming shoulders, not being able to lift my right arm without helping it along with my left. But no blood, and the show must go on. The little bit of solo that I had was played splendidly, of course. Actually the whole concert was pretty splendid, but I'm glad it's over!
Don't you have a blog? - The tear-down went pretty quickly, so I headed to the nearby steakhouse for a beer where many of the orchestra members had gathered. I found myself sitting next to the executive director of one of the other orchestras in the state. We aren't three breaths away from introducing ourselves, and she said, "Don't you have a blog?" Yeah. She was familiar with it.
Delayed - Still didn't get around to all of last week's HNTs yet. Hope to in the next day or so.
Badass - Have you seen the trailer for the new John Travolta movie? Vinnie Barbarino has gone severely badass!
Sad News - Most of you know Rachel. She's been my beer-drinkin' buddy for years, helped start HNT, and is my tour guide for Glacier National Park. Her dad died Sunday afternoon, after declining health, and a few days in the hospital. Keep her and her family in your prayers this week.

Mahler HNT

It is symphony week this week. Perhaps it's all getting easier for me. Perhaps it's my advanced years and I'm mellowing out. Perhaps I've broken down and given in to the usual crap. Whatever reason, I haven't been getting as stressed out as I have in years past. That's a good thing, I suppose.

We're playing Mahler's 7th Symphony Saturday night. Mahler is not one of my favorite composers, mainly because of my unfamiliarity with his music. Just not one of my top composers. Which is too bad, because he writes some great stuff! Mahler tip-toed (hell, danced!) on both sides of that line between genius and insanity. He was as screwed up as they come. And it shines through in his music.

Since I'm not familiar with his music, imagine my surprise when I come to find out that there's actually a short bass trombone solo! Not just a part where I'm playing without the rest of the bone section, but an honest-to-goodness solo! Tchaikovsky did that quite a bit, but I know those solos. This one caught me off-guard. So I'm having to practice it. I hate practice. But it did offer a photo opportunity with Michelle! (yes, for those who don't know...my horn has a name...)

"This Girl Is a Woman Now"
by Gary Puckett & the Union Gap

This girl walked in dreams
Playing in a world of her own
This girl was a child
Existing in a playground of stone
Then one night her world was changed
Her life and dreams were rearanged
And she would never be the same again

This girl is a woman now
She's learned how to give
This girl is a woman now
She's found out what it's all about
And she's learning learning to live

This girl tasted love
As tender as the gentle dawn
She cried a single tear
A teardrop that was sweet and warm
Our hearts told us we were right
And on that sweet and velvet night
A child had died
A woman had been born

This week's MG is a birthday girl (hence, the birthday suit). She's also the youngest of the regular HNTers! As of Thursday, she's no longer a teenager! She'll be revealed Thursday afternoon--be sure to check back!
Our young but always sexy Mystery Guest is none other than Amy, over at More Sex, Chocolate and Red Lipstick. Be sure to stop by and wish her a Happy Birthday!

A little low on numbers for "...the Other HNT" this week, since I was computerless for most of the day. However, it's definitely NSFW this week! Take a chance and check them out!
Edit--Snuck some late submissions in this morning. Be sure to stop by!

As mentioned above, it's a busy week. Wednesday I'll be out of town, and Thursday through Saturday night will be spent with the symphony. I'll get around to everyone as soon as I can, but that might not be until Sunday! Have a great end of the month!

Boring Stuff

I sometimes feel like I have to write something here, just so people don't think I've landed in the hospital again. Or worse...

Not a terribly exciting weekend. Saturday was spent at two full rehearsals, plus the loading in/out of equipment. We're playing Mahler this weekend. I'm not a huge Mahler fan, though, as a brass player, I should probably be flogged for that statement. I think it comes from a lack of exposure to his music. That being said, this particular symphony (his 7th, for those keeping score) is a great piece of music! So sitting through two full rehearsals in one day wasn't that bad! It was cold and snowy out, so it's not like I missed out on anything during the day.

Unfortunately, it was cold and snowy out, meaning that the load in/out happened in the cold and snow. I must be getting old in my old age, because that really wasn't all that bad either. WHAT'S HAPPENING TO ME??? I can't even bitch decently anymore! Ooh...here's something. Friday night, I loaded the truck and dropped it off at the rehearsal site for the night. I had to walk about a quarter mile to get back to my car. Not two steps away from the truck, I fell. The first of the snow came Friday afternoon, covering the ice from the week before. The ice that was as smooth as a freshly-zambonied rink. So I fell (I'd give it a 7.35--not very good at all) in one of those total body, bone-jarring falls. Landed mostly on my elbow. Which in turn jammed my shoulder. Which really hurt all day Saturday while loading in/out. Today--it doesn't hurt at all. I can't even get injured properly these days!
I have to set everything for Wednesday on auto-post, as I have to drive over to Missoula. I have a date with my favorite and oldest niece! She's over there now (finally...a fellow Griz in the family!) working on her PhD in toxicology. She's involved in research primarily, meaning she's making big bucks as a student. Well, big bucks compared to when I was a grad student there. Apparently, research pays grad students far better than music does...

Anyhoo, we have tickets to see "Jesus Christ Superstar" there. Remember back in 2008 when I went to see it with Moose in Minneapolis? Same production. Some changes in cast members, but Jesus is again played by Ted Neely (the some role he played in the original movie). I got front row seats (and pretty close to center, if my figuring is right) for this show, so I'm all sorts of excited! And my niece is too, even though she's not familiar with it. Full report is forthcoming...
So the Super Bowl is set. I was happy that the Colts won. Not because I like the Colts, but because my fantasy football team was loaded with them. And because I didn't get sucked into the whole Jets lovefest that seemed to crop up. I never really thought they belonged this deep into the playoffs (and wouldn't have made it as a wild card if the Colts had played them straight up in the last game of the regular season). As for the Vikes/Saints...I don't think the better team won, though I'm happy to see the Saints in the Super Bowl. I would have been happy with the Vikes, too, but they pretty much handed it away. I refuse to blame Favre for the loss--there was plenty of blame to go around. In any case, I'm rooting for the Saints. But they'll have to play a much better game than they did this weekend!
