It's getting better!

In reading back through the archives, I noticed a trend regarding my posts about the symphony. For seven years, I've often bitched and moaned about dealing with personnel, or the amount of time the production end was taking. But over the past year or so, I've noticed that I'm not doing it as much. The personnel will always be a thorn, but not my thorn anymore, so that's out of the mix. And the production stuff has been running incredibly smoothly as of late. That's not to say that I don't keep overly busy, or that there's not a lot of work that needs to be done. But I've either grown to accept the hassles, or the hassles aren't really there anymore. In either case, I'm not complaining!

The other thing I've noticed is that I haven't complained after a concert about how badly it went. Our concerts of late have been nothing short of spectacular. A strong adjective, but we've really been hitting on all cylinders over the past few years. This past Saturday's was no exception. Our cello soloist played what is arguably the most difficult concerto written for the instrument by Prokofiev, and he had the entire audience up on their feet in applause before he could stand and take his bows. He then took the podium after intermission to conduct the next piece, Tchaikovsky's Cappricio Italien, which ends like a bat out of hell. Again, a standing ovation. Our final piece of the evening was Stravinsky's Firebird Suite, which is one of the greatest pieces written in the 20th century. Another long standing ovation.

It's times like this when I really, really like what I do!
Fortunately, I was stuck inside most of the weekend, as Spring took a vacation. A skiff of snow, cool temps, and lots of wind made for a miserable weekend weatherwise. Hopefully we're getting to see the end of that!
I don't know exactly what happens on/around June 26th, but I had FIVE birthday notifications on FB yesterday! And another TWO friends that aren't on FB. Something's in the air in June!
The response has been interesting to my announcement last week that OHNT is ending shortly. I've gotten a couple of emails from lurkers I've never heard of, lamenting its end. Not one of these people has ever left a comment, yet are hoping I'll change my mind. On the other hand, I suppose it's nice to know that there's a "regular" audience over there! Regardless, there's only TWO more OHNTs left. Feel free to join in if you'd like!
Even though I'm a day late, here's your weekly dose of Pomplamoose! An interesting version of "My Favorite Things". Enjoy!

Because I'm lazy, and I figure you guys need a laugh at my expense...a repost from Sept., 2007. Enjoy!

Well, I have to apologize... These aren't the dorky pictures I was planning on using. Believe me, there's plenty to be had! My plan was to find the right pictures, scan this afternoon, and sit back and bask in my dorkiness.
Instead, I spent it looking for scanning software, or something that I could do to scan... Not sure what's wrong, but I spent all my time doing that, rather than gathering the "good" dorkiness.

Above you can see me in the 5th grade, complete with the Nehru shirt (I had like 5 of them) and the handmade Indian beads, made in Japan. My fashion consultants? Davy, Mick, Mike and Peter. The Monkees, of course! And probably the height of dorkiness for these purposes--the all-boy choir in 8th grade. White turtlenecks, blue vests and black pants. Can you imagine how many of us got beat up?

Over here in the purple (paisley, at that!) is the 8th grade picture. Braces. The "smile" to try to hide them. Not sure what was going on with the hair, but it's the same hair that everyone had. And the nose had not yet been broken...

Finally, not so much dorky, but it's the look I had for my last three years of high school. Puberty must have hit, because it's only 18 months after the purple picture. Perfectly coiffed hair, braces were gone, a bit of a tan, and dammit, I was somewhat skinny!

As mentioned above, it's not as dorky as I had intended, but I don't doubt for a minute that you guys will make up for it for me! Looking forward to all that you've got!

Today would have been her 34th birthday...

Happy Birthday, Stealth.
I always thought it fitting that it fell on the first day of Spring...

Is It Spring Yet?

Spring is trying really hard around here, but alternating the 60-70° days with two to three days of winter weather advisories makes it tough. There's hope on the horizon though!
My Griz, who had a very good season this year in basketball, didn't fare as well at March Madness. In fact, they had the worst loss of all the Thursday games. The upside? I don't have to fake having any sort of interest in the rest of the tournament! I did, however, see my FB blow up that afternoon lamenting the fact that Syracuse was going to bust a lot of brackets based on what was happening to them. So I had to watch the end of that game. I don't know what the refs were smoking, or what game they were watching, but damn...
This is symphony week, and it hardly feels like it. This concert will probably be my favorite one of the season. All Russian composers--I do love me the Russians. But production-wise, it's a piece of cake. Or at least feels like it. Nowhere near the amount of work as the May concert has already taken, or the summer concert. Sort of my last relaxing concert for awhile, I guess.

We did have rehearsal all day Saturday, so no St. Patrick's Day celebrating for me. I'm a bit disappointed about that, but it's probably for the best. My wild ways have passed me by, I'm afraid. The good part--no hangover!
Speaking of the summer concert, things are flowing smoothly so far. For as behind as I was stepping into it, all the contacts have been made, and everyone's on the same page. So far. Here's to hoping that continues!
An announcement... After six full years, it's time for OHNT to end. I kept it going primarily to gently wean the truly exhibitionist among you who weren't ready for HNT to end. But, similar to the reasons HNT was retired, the participation was down, depending far too much on a small handful of participants. The first OHNT post went up on April 6, 2006, and the last one will go up on April 5, 2012. That leaves three more opportunities to join in, if you're interested! I'm sure I'll wax poetic later on, but I figured you should know now.
My Pomplamoose offering this week is a cover of Michael Jackson's "Beat It". It's a little different, but still pretty good. Enjoy!

Busy, busy, busy...

I knew that the next four months were going to be busy, but geez... We've got a concert in a week and a half, and I'm hardly breaking a sweat about it. It doesn't even raise a blip on the radar of coming attractions! The big concert coming up is in May. Mahler's "Symphony of a Thousand". We're not going to have the full thousand, but we're going to be much larger than normal. Almost 350 singers and 100 musicians. And the associated pains. Fortunately, others are in charge of housing and feeding the singers coming in from other states. But I'm the one who gets to squeeze that many people in a really confined space. It's going to be wonderful, and should go off without a hitch, but man, what a lot of work! Thank God we've been working on this for awhile. I'll fill you in on the summer concert later...
One down side of this next concert...I've got rehearsal all day on Saturday. St. Patrick's Day Saturday. My traditional first green beer out of the tap at O'Toole's ain't gonna happen this year. Damn...or should that be o'damn?
The University of Montana made the NCAA Tourney again this year by virtue of winning both the conference and the conference tourney. Got them a #13 seed in the East. A first round upset is possible, but I don't know if they'll get past the second round. Still it's nice to see the Griz still playing, but Gucci's Cats are sitting at home!
Didn't fill you in on the checkup I had a couple of weeks ago. Doctor likes my numbers, for the most part. Blood pressure is still a tad higher than he'd like, but not "high". And the weight isn't good. On the other hand, my cholesterol (and all the other blood numbers) are just peachy! So I'm off the hook for another six months! Woohoo!
Lastly, it's Pomplamoose and one of their originals this week!

What Doesn't Stay in Vegas? Sprawl.

I found this pretty interesting. It's a short video taken from the Landsat 5 satellite, which was launched March 1, 1984. This is its view of Las Vegas and its growth over the past 28 years. The red patches are actually green space--mostly golf courses. You should see this in full screen. Pretty amazing stuff.

Gotta Work On Posting More...
(third time's a charm?)

I've mentioned in the past that I listen to Rush Limbaugh on my way to work, simply for the laughs to start out the day (laughs...as in laughing at the absurdity). But after last week's tirade, and subsequent continued attacks, I think he might have bitten off more than he thought. Will he be forced off the air? I doubt it. There's too many fanatics out there who agree with him, or are spineless enough to buy into his way of thinking. Me? I don't need the laughs anymore. I've got a zillion CDs I can listen to that have been ignored for a long time. Thanks, Rush, for getting me back to the music!
Speaking of getting back to the music... I have been a big fan of Chicago since the first time I heard their music in the early 70s. As all good band geeks were. Chicago of the 70s was unparalleled. Chicago of the 80s sold out and almost disappeared, thanks to the techno-pop of the time. I remember one video of theirs where the horn players were all playing keyboards! WTF??? Fortunately they pulled their heads out and got back to being a horn band. So what's this part of the post about? I went back to listening to some of their later music that I had sort of ignored, and have found some new favorites! Horn lines that were far more intricate than I had remembered, and far more complex than their early stuff. Not much of it commercially successful, but then again, their best stuff never was!
The spring weather I've been yearning for showed up this weekend! It was in the 60s, the sun was out early, there were no clouds--wonderful weather for early March in MT! Of course, I look out this morning, and we got snow overnight and it's going to be chilly. But the weekend is supposed to be as nice as last weekend, and Daylight Savings Time goes into effect on Sunday! By golly, spring might just be right around the corner!
Speaking of weather--I haven't heard any horror stories from any friends who had to deal with the tornadoes of last week. A couple of somewhat near misses, but no tragedies. Whew.
March Madness is about to hit in full swing. Yet another major sporting event I'll blissfully ignore (unless my Griz happen to surprise a few people, but I'm not expecting it...).
Here's your weekly dose of Pomplamoose. Be sure to watch Granny dancing towards the end!

Road Markers

I am often amazed at how my life has evolved with regards to music. I was raised in a musically "challenged" household during my childhood. Dad was never into music that I remember. Even into my adulthood, I don't recall that he ever just listened. He did enjoy dancing with Mom though, and if there was a dance floor available at any function they attended, that's where you'd find them. As for Mom--she had kept some of her Glenn Miller records from her youth. I have a feeling that they were actually my grandmother's, as she wasn't even a teenager when he disappeared. These were records that she'd pull out when she decided she needed to teach me how to dance (and started my love for big bands and jazz). But overall, neither of my parents had any sort of musical influence on me. Not because they were purposely depriving me, but because they themselves were not raised in musical families. But some musical moments stick out.

I've written here (years ago) about laying in my bed when I was about 6 or 7 and listening to my brand new transistor radio before going to sleep. The radio was sort of a copper/brown color. The station was KBLL. And on Sunday nights from 7-9, I think, I would listen to trucker songs. Red Sovine. Dave Dudley. Phantom 309. Teddy Bear. Six Days on the Road. You get the idea. Then immediately following was "Classics in the Night". Sunday night classical music on AM radio! The theme song was the first line or two of Mozart's Eine Kleine Nachtmusik (a little nightmusic). I could rarely stay up long enough to listen to much, but that theme has forever stuck in my memory. An odd mix...twangy country and classical.

The mid-60s are sort of a memory blur. We had, by this time, moved up to South Benton, and I had a whole neighborhood of kids to play with. We were devoted fans of "Dark Shadows", and would take a time-out from playing Kick the Can to run inside to watch it (either at our house, or the next door neighbor's). And we would watch "The Monkees" religiously!

Try as I might, I can't really recall what I would have listened to my Monkees albums on. I remember when my parents bought a stereo system, but I can't imagine that I could have played them as often as I think I did. I don't recall if I had my own record player or not, but I must have had something. In any case, I played my albums, I perused every issue of Tiger Beat, and basically learned all I could about the Monkees. My mom must have liked them a little too, because they were much more clean cut and wholesome than the Beatles. I started learning the trumpet at this time as well, and I recall Mom buying me the sheet music for Pleasant Valley Sunday (she also bought me the sheet music to "If I Were A Rich Man" from Fiddler on the Roof, but that's another story...). I learned how to play it on my own and surprised my band teacher (Sister Eucharista) with it. She, in turn, gave me a lesson about transposing music--something that stuck with me ever since.

The Monkees were as close to rock as anything else that I heard during that time, even though it would be more correctly termed as "pop". With the aforementioned stereo, Mom started buying albums. The Lettermen. The Vogues. Stuff that would be best categorized as "easy listening". The Monkees were off to the edge of that category. The Beatles were definitely not something she'd listen to (at the time), though I seem to remember an album of Beatles' music performed by 101 Strings. This is the music that I was raised on. This explains my love of The Carpenters, and how Close To You was the greatest song ever recorded.

By the time I got to high school, music was an important part of my life, though I still didn't think of it as something I'd do forever. In fact, I was not in band during my freshman or sophomore years, and was much more into choir (4 years--All State Choir/1 year--All Northwest Choir, thankyouverymuch). I also played bass in my first rock band, which is where I first learned of groups like Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple and Emerson, Lake & Palmer. Far different from the pop groups that I dared play at home before then.

College is where my eyes were really opened to real jazz music, as well as funk and soul. And where my decision to become a music teacher were formed. And where I realized that I'd never know all there was to know about music--it's a life-long learning process. And where I re-played my Monkees and Carpenters and other albums that I'd taken from home and listened to them from a musician's standpoint, and finding out that there's some damned good musicianship going on!

The death yesterday of Davy Jones actually hit me harder than I would have imagined, and probably more than I'd like to admit. I'm to the point in my life where celebrity's deaths start acting like road markers on life's highway. When Michael Jackson died, it marked my grad school days, watching in awe the first time I saw Thriller. And how the bar I was in went absolutely silent when it came on. When Whitney Houston died, it marked my last teaching days, and how her music was so easily accessible to high school choirs for a spring concert. But now, with Davy Jones' passing, something's different. A man who didn't fall into the dark pits that so many of his comtemporaries did. A man who, individually didn't change the world, but as part of a group, did his part to change music in the US. And despite the critical backlash of being a "fake" musical group, there's no question that their records were legit, and their appeal was great.

I listened to all my Monkees albums last night. Yeah, I dragged out the LPs--not the CDs. I remembered the good times with the rest of the neighbor kids. I remembered all the words--even to the songs that weren't big hits. It's sad that a member of one of my biggest childhood influences has passed on. I fear that this is just the beginning...

Gotta Work On Posting More...(second attempt)

What a long, long few days I've had! Four days, five rehearsals, two concerts. Not too sure that we thought that one through very well... The good part is that both concerts came off remarkably well. With a minimum number of hassles. And a new appreciation for Shostakovich!
I've written a great deal over the years about my nieces, but not too much about my nephew. Now that he's the last kid, he's growing into his own. As a sophomore, he played a bit on the varsity football team, and he's been putting in a good deal of time on the varsity basketball team as a point guard. The state playoffs start up this weekend, and hopefully he'll get the chance to make some major contributions!
"The Godfather" is on AMC all this week. You can pretty much guess where my butt's going to be planted this week!
Mom asked me this afternoon if I'd watched the Oscars last night. HA! With "The Walking Dead" on??? Pfffttt...
Did anyone notice that February is almost over? How did that happen? Good thing there's an extra day this year so I can say I enjoyed it!
Good golly, my life has gotten boring.
And now...Pomplamoose covers the "Angry Birds" theme.

Gotta Work On Posting More...

You know that great feeling when you get an unexpected text from someone? It's so much better when it comes from an attractive 17 y.o.! (I'll let your minds wander for a bit...)
I'm not at all excited about the new word verification needed for Blogger pages now. One had to assume that, eventually, they'd run out of fake words to use, or even some unexpected real ones, but I had no idea they'd start using the double word captcha. Most of which are damned hard to read. For the love of all that is holy, change your accounts so that we don't have to go through that anymore!!! In 7 years of blogging, I've never used it, and have never needed to use it. Nope, not a fan at all.
Got to spend the weekend house sitting for my baby sister. Not so much sitting for the house, but for the pain-in-the-ass dog. It's a shih tzu. A goofy looking mutt. Hyperactive, to say the least. He and I had a couple of "Come To Jesus" meetings, but overall, things weren't too bad. Watch the video to see what I had to put up with...

Busy week ahead of me for Symphony. Youth Concert for the 4th/5th graders in the area on Thursday, then a 4-hour turnaround for rehearsals for the weekend's concert. Two totally different set ups. Truth is...it's not going to be that bad. But I'll deny it if you repeat that!
And because it's Monday... Pomplamoose's version of "Mr. Sandman" is just as good the original!

Hope Cupid's Arrow Hits You In the Butt!

Since it's Valentine's Day tomorrow, I give you Pomplamoose ("If You Think You Need Some Lovin'") AND another version of "My Funny Valentine" by the incomparable Ella Fitzgerald.

Superiority

I may go to hell for saying this, but I love watching those one-word shows on TLC and other cable channels. You know the ones...Hoarders, Infested!, Intervention, and the other similar ones (My Strange Addiction, Predator Raw, etc., etc.). Yes, there's a lot of sad things in the world, and in many of these cases, the victims have mental problems that cause these results (not to mention families), but I can't help to feel okay about my own life. Even feeling superior in many instances. Not the way to feel about your fellow man. However, the moms on Toddlers & Tiaras are a totally different story...
Speaking of messes, Whitney Houston died. Glorious voice, really screwed up life. While it's sad, I read a comment on a FB post that a friend linked to that had a more realistic point of view. One that I think I pretty much agree with:
How many more times does this have to happen? Making music is one of the most powerful, wonderful things a person can do, but it DOES NOT make them more important than a teacher, a cook, or plumber, or garbage man. Just because you sing back up vocals, or play the famous sax solo on a song, or mixed and produced a comeback album for a washed up star, or win an award on a tv show for singing (where the 2 out of 3 of the a judges are autotuned OR don’t sing) or sell 170 million records does not make you an idol or god or goddess. Your hard work and dedication mean you earn the reward for just that, your hard work and dedication to your art. Not the perception of your celebrity. The culture is backwards. NBC-BRAVO aired a tv show on the cracked up Whitney, and now they are covering the HORROR of her death. That poor woman was built up and taken down and her body was not prepared for it. No one is. Michael Jackson, Elvis, Luther Vandross, etc. Whether it’s drugs or alcohol or food, the indulgence comes from masking the pain and fear. Whitney appeared on Oprah due to Clive Davis’ string pulling comeback, and SHE WAS NOT READY. We all saw it. No one said anything. Including Oprah. God forbid we rock the boat, and get the person the help they need.
Last night I watched McCartney get feted for his songs, the thing that all of us are trying to be a part of, the songs, the content. Not the celebrity. He and the Beatles invented this music business and he seems pretty healthy. Why? Cause he doesn’t believe the bullshit. He just wants to make music. Stevie Wonder sang a 3 hour concert, in amazing voice. No one can touch his artistry, and he is humbled by the attention. Yet he is becoming the rare exception instead of the main influence.
It’s a false culture, and the TMZ/Kardashian/Lohan/media whore inmates are taking over the zoo. Does anyone’s life change by knowing who Demi Moore is coupled with?
Producers are making inferior music with protools and auto tune because the hottie who’s 16 is less of a risk, even though there’s not a NOTE of originality.
Watch how many Adele imitators come out this year.
Music is created to express and receive connection, not exchange for a mansion. Whatever $ people THINK the Beatles earned is a pittance compared to what their songs made people feel. For someone to say “I’m living large like an idol or a rockstar,” is a false goal. To have an equal experience as say, John Lennon, one would really have to give half their money away to charity or doctors without borders, or something! And that would be only the start, since the creator of Imagine had us actually imagining, and he lost his life for it.
Now, it seems we’re cracked and bloody like his Gandhi glasses, (another who btw who told us to be the change.)
I wish someone could have reached her. She deserved happiness more than adoration from strangers.
We have to change our thinking. What else is there for us if we don’t? We can only keep making music and let the sounds fall on the ears of those who can hear. Live our own beautiful lives, and give our adoration to those who deserve (our friends, our families, our children) instead of the culture/media.

Spent all day Saturday in symphony rehearsals. Which means my day gets started 3 hours earlier than anyone else, to pick up equipment, set it up, and then sit for 2 full rehearsals. Oh, yeah--another hour-plus to tear it down, return equipment and the truck. All in all, a full 12 hours. My knees are letting me know about their displeasure.
Valentine's Day is coming up. Not dreading it, but not anticipating it either. Hope you have some plans, one way or the other! And as I do every year..."My Funny Valentine". This time by Etta James...

Monday After XLVI

Well, I watched the big game, but I didn't enjoy it. Though the last three minutes were pretty good. Thought Miranda Lambert and Blake Shelton had some nice harmonies, but their performance didn't do a thing for me. Kelly Clarkson didn't show me anything. And while Madonna's halftime was nowhere near as bad as I had anticipated, it seemed pretty flat as well. Granted, she's 53, but her dance moves just aren't there anymore. Perhaps that should be taken as a sign. On the other hand, she looks pretty good for an old lady! As for whoever it was that flipped off the camera...I missed it. As I'm sure that 75% of America did. I didn't even read about it until the media pounced all over it this morning. As for the game itself...eh. I keep on reading how it was a "classic" game. Sorry, I don't see it. A good game? Maybe. Happy with the outcome? Well, the lesser of two evils won, so I suppose I was. Now I get to avoid professional sports until August. Except for the Masters, of course!
Had a gig with the soul band on Saturday night. Everyone loved us, of course, and we had a good crowd through the entire evening. We played pretty well, though my chops were hurting the next day, and my face felt like it wanted to fall off. And my knees let me know all the next day (and beyond) how unhappy they were. It sucks to get old...
Here's a little bit of trivia for you... Growing up, my birthday day fell on Easter Sunday three different times. On my 22nd, 33rd, 44th bdays. I checked online, out of boredom, and found that it won't fall on Easter again until my 106th, 117th, 128th, 139th bdays! I'm fairly confident in saying I won't see any of those dates (or if I do, I won't know about it!).
It's Monday...it's time for Pomplamoose!

New Stuff

Remember last week when I mentioned that a certain blogger was about to pop out a baby? Well, she did it on Friday! The blogger in question? Cowgirl (or Cute butEvil, as some of you might remember her)! You can see her submission for the HNT finale here. Momma and baby boy are at home and doing fine. Sorry...no more details. But I'll bet that if you emailed her, you'd get the same picture that she sent me!
It's almost too late, but Monday is not yet over, and I wanted to start something new here. I'm not going to name it, but if I were, it would be "Pomplamoose Mondays". I'll be posting a different Pomplamoose video each Monday. Get it? I certainly didn't want to be alliterative (go look that up if you don't know what it means), though it sort of is. Anyhoo...here's the first posting. A cover of I highly urge you to spend many hours on YouTube watching their videos!

Bear Hugs 'n Stuff

Spent the past couple of weeks reading about a certain blogger's mom, who suffered two major strokes, and died this past weekend. It sucks when you can't be there to give them a big ole bear hug...
On the other hand, I chatted with another blogger who is due to pop out a new baby at any time now. It sucks when you can't be there to give them a big ole bear hug. Though that might not be the wisest thing to do at the moment...
The worst possible scenario happened in the NFL...a Giants/Patriots Super Bowl. My disinterest in this game is as close to my disinterest in the NBA, NASCAR, and MLB. There have been 45 Super Bowls, and I can only think of one that I haven't watched. It was the early 70s, and I was sick in bed, while my parents threw a SB party outside my bedroom door. There's a handful that I don't remember much of due to massive consumption of beer. But this one...this one holds the potential of being avoided on purpose. There's literally nothing that interests me. The commercials will be online as they go. Madonna at halftime? No thanks. I'm going to have to come up with an alternate game plan...
Plenty to keep me busy this weekend on the music front. Symphony concert on Saturday night, sprinkled with equipment moves, stage setting, and a soul band rehearsal, just to cleanse the palate. Actually, this will be a pretty good concert. "Rhapsody In Blue" will be the popular piece, but we're doing Bernstein's "Symphony #2", which is more of a piano concerto (solo w/orchestra). Not a familiar piece to most, but a great piece of music! And it's difficult, but "doable". Will report after the fact...
Playing quite a bit with my new toy. Looking for more iPad apps, but am very pleased with the way it works with Facebook. Flipboard is pretty good too (thanks for the suggestion, Biscuit!). Maybe next weekend should be spent consolidating and syncing all my various computers...
Don't forget to check out "...the Other HNT" these days. It's still going strong! And always looking for submissions!

Still here!

I just mentioned to someone in an email today that I can't believe that I actually had time to deal with HNT during the week! Work is kicking my ass these days, and there's no time for play!
My fantasy picks for the NFL post-season went down the drain with the losses by the Saints and the Packers. In a twisted reversal, I was actually rooting for Brady and the Patriots. Only for fantasy purposes--I still hate all that they stand for. At this point, however, since I don't have any money riding on the outcomes anymore, I'm rooting for the Niners all the way. If it ends up to be a Jets/Patriots Super Bowl, I might very well look for some professional bowling coverage that night...
Big news! I'm the proud owner of an iPad 2. Officially one of the cool kids. But now I need to figure out how I'm going to use it. It's not going to be my primary toy, but it would be really nice to get the right apps on it to use it while doing symphony stuff. Just means I'll have to spend time on it to investigate! My only disappointment so far--my Words With Friends app seems wonky. I get notifications when it's my turn, but the board doesn't update. Need to figure that out...
If I would have written this post last night, I would have made mention that our temps were in the upper 20s, no snow and no wind. That all fell by the wayside last night. Depending on what weather app you looked at, it was anywhere between -18° and +9° this morning (probably closer to 0°), about 4 inches of snow, but fortunately, no wind. We are right on the edge of the cold front coming from Canada. Temps 60 miles to the north of us are 20-30 degrees colder (or more!), while 60 miles to the west and south of us, they're 20 degrees warmer. And all the snow that Portland and Seattle got missed us, but the northwest part of the state is under feet of snow. Go figure.
News on the symphony front...I lamented the fact that the project manager for last summer's big concert dropped the ball in a major way. It appears that, due to some other administrative surprises, her position and donor's coordinator's position (for lack of a better term) are going to be combined, then redistributed. Which means we've got a great person with a good track record going after the money, and I'll be in charge of the rest. Sort of what I've been doing in the past, but with the added tasks of production logistics (ordering porta-potties, dealing with vendors, renting the stage, etc.). Which means that, for the first time since 2004, I won't be onstage performing. Considering the amount of money I'm going to be getting paid for this additional work, I'm not complaining!
Hope all of you in the US has written, or signed a petition, to your Congressmen regarding their vote on SOPA/PIPA. It's important! And if you don't know what this is, then look for it on Wikipedia today. Or check out this link from TheOatmeal.com

This 'n That

It's been a productive couple of days so far. Nothing major--just little oddball chores that have been taken care of. Things like replacing the light in the microwave, switching out the battery in the smoke alarm, and getting a new key made. Little stuff that's piled up for awhile.
Since I busted my ass to get my apartment clean for Moose's visit last month, and now having a new bathroom floor, I'm finding I sort of like living in a clean apartment! And maintaining that is much easier than putting it off for any length of time. Who'da thunk it?
There's a decent chance that another blogger/HNTer will be making her way out here this spring. Woohoo! Another reason to keep the place cleaned up!
Thank God the college football season is over. Not so much that it's over, but that the hype of playing in a bowl game is over. For a few months anyway. The current bowl system is such a joke among the fans. The BCS committee lamented last week that bowl attendance was low this year. No shit, Sherlock! When you've got teams with a losing record "earning" a bowl game appearance?!? Remember the old days, when there were FIVE major bowl games, and maybe another five less major ones? It's too bad that corporate America runs the BCS...
Spent a late night online over the weekend and got myself into trouble. Put in a bid on something that I really didn't think I'd win. On something I hadn't convinced myself I needed yet. But I won, and I'm about to become one of the cool kids! Hope this doesn't bite me in the butt...
The soul band has a rehearsal tonight. We haven't played together since September (August?). It'll be good to get back into playing with them again.
I was only mildly annoyed at Geico's zipline piggy at first. Now...I'd like to shoot the TV.
There's a new radio station in town. In the interest of giving it a chance, I've been listening to it exclusively for a week now. Granted, our music choices here are primarily country or classic rock. This station was started to tap into "today's music". Oh, the state of music is worse off than I had imagined. I've hear ONE song where the vocals weren't somehow synthesized. I've heard "Stereo Hearts" literally every time I've gotten in the car. Every song has that thumpa-thumpa rhythm sound. I might have a full post regarding the sad state of affairs of "today's music"...
Speaking of music...I heard Roberta Flack's "First Time Ever I Saw Your Face" yesterday. For the first time in ages. What an incredible song! Achingly slow, subtle accompaniment, wonderful harmonic structure. And that fantastic voice! Really, there's no comparison with the drek that's put out there today...

Sometimes It's the Little Things...

Nothing points out the fact that I need to get a life as the giddiness I feel in sharing these two pics...

Since mid-July, the ceiling above my toilet has been dripping. Not at a constant rate, but enough to time one's business on the toilet in order to avoid the next drip. Fortunately, most of the drips ended up directly in the toilet, but occasionally, the drips would divert away from the direct drop, and hit the carpet. Yes, carpet. My bathroom was carpeted. Let that sink in... Eventually, the carpet got to a condition where it needed to be replaced. Mold, discoloring, and an appearance that looked like I had the aim of a two year old. Moose would probably concur.

Without getting into the hassles I've gone through in getting this taken care of, I can happily report that I now have a new bathroom floor (vinyl, thank you), and the chunk of ceiling that was basically falling out has been prepped for patching. It's the little things in life that bring me joy and happiness. Such as the joy of not having to be the one who ripped out the carpet (can you imagine how nasty that had to be???). It appears that 2012 is starting out well!!

Final Thoughts About HNT

Someone asked me if HNT was going to just walk away without any final thoughts. My first reaction was no, but it would be somewhat negative, and as Emmy posted a few days ago, do we really need that? Then again, I've bitten my tongue on just about every subject that's come down the pike for six and a half years. It might not be so bad to let some of it out. So I'll compromise... I'll write about the good stuff, then some of the bad stuff after that. I'll warn you, so if you don't want to read it, you don't have to...

THE GOOD
  • Obviously, the friendships and community that have come about because of HNT would be its biggest strength, I think. Generally, most people who gave HNT a shot, did so with some trepidation, but found that there was an entire community happy to meet them. I think that if anyone didn't feel it, it's because they didn't really try to interact with those who stopped by. That sort of faded some by the end, and many discontinued because they didn't feel they fit in. And that's too bad. As far as friendships go, I think we've all made some true friends through all of this. I've been fortunate in that I've got 6+ years of HNTers I can call 'friend'. Of course, that's long enough to have lost some friends in that time, too. And that's too bad. I still find it amazing how many HNTers from those first couple of years are still friends on FB, commenting on each other almost daily, in spite of leaving HNT behind long ago.
  • Some people look better in front of a camera than others. That's just a fact of life. But everyone who joined in, whether showing all they had, or restricting what they showed, had to develop a bit of narcissism. Something that we might not have had when we started. Confidence was bred out of that, and I think we all came out stronger at the end of it. Did that come from gratuitous, generic comments? Sometimes, sure. But it sure beat out anything negative that occasionally popped up!
  • Photography skills improved over the years. Which is not to say that everyone became photographers. Many people got fancy DSLR cameras over time. Some learned how to use them. Others didn't. Many learned the basics of Photoshop. Others learned the secrets of Photoshop. Others didn't. Some learned that it's not the camera that makes the picture--it's the person taking the picture. Even if it's with a tripod and timer. There's been a great deal of variety in the styles and types of pictures taken. While HNT was never intended to be "artsy", I'm glad that many HNTers took that route from time to time.
  • Without HNT, I know I would not be exposed to the lifestyles that many of you lead. Some of you are real freaks! ;-) I'm not judging good or bad--just that life is far more complex than I was led to believe when I was growing up. I think that many of us had our eyes opened to that as well.
  • In the early days, when half-nekkidness was rather fresh and unknown, it drew attention around the internet. A quarter-page article in an Indian business magazine; a radio talk-show host in Winnipeg talked and blogged about it; it got mentioned in passing on Dr. Phil; Dr. Gregory House even mentioned it one week (sort of, but not really, but I'll take it!); numerous sex blogs made mention of it; it was discussed on at least two internet radio shows; the list goes on and on. Usually positive, but sometimes slammed. HNT stood tall throughout...
  • The secrets. Oh, man, the secrets. I've always claimed that when I write the HNT tell-all book, I'd become a millionaire. Either from people buying it to read it, or from the money people would pay to not let it see the light of day. No worries...that won't happen. But I do know the secrets. It's part of my nature. It's what I do with the symphony. I know all the inner workings. I think that trust sprung from OHNT. There's a huge number of HNTers who have sent submissions there that would never admit to it, or wouldn't even hint that they even knew what OHNT was. Even I was blown away by some of the people who joined in there! That takes some trust in me. And I don't take that lightly. Out of that, in chats and emails, I've learned that there's an awful lot that goes on that we don't generally know about. Secret blogs, secret affairs, secret rendezvous, backstabbing, gossiping, screenshots from Twitter, screenshots from texts, sharing emails received from super-skeevy guys (thanks for the term, Ms. I)--only to find them almost verbatim from someone else earlier, etc., etc. Gentlemen, some of you really need to develop your schtick--many of you are just getting laughed at behind your backs...
  • I liked the marketing technique that HNT became. It's a long held belief that "sex sells". Not really a whole lot different here. Except that in most cases, "sex" would be too strong a term. There's not one of us who did HNT who didn't get some sort of a bump in our stats. There are many who got disillusioned by people only coming by on Thursdays for pictures, and not sticking around to read their writing. That's the problem with "sex sells"--if the product (the blog) isn't interesting, people won't come back. There's many who dropped out of HNT over the years who have huge followings. Their product is interesting. There's others who dropped out and their blogs floundered. Their product is not interesting. Of course, you can then get into the whole debate about why the blog is being written in the first place--for themselves or an audience. And there's all sorts of different answers to that. However, I still believe that HNT was as much a marketing tool as anything. And some people used it quite successfully!
  • I loved some of the relationships of HNTers. There's a good number of spouses/significant others that do it, either together or separately. Did you know we had a mother/daughter team who helped take each other's HNTs (not as raunchy as that sounds, pervs!)? Or a few sets of sisters who HNTed? We even had a brother/sister duo that HNTed (not together, of course). And a few cousins!
Nothing else jumps to mind with the positive stuff. It was a lot of fun!
Now here's where you might want to quit reading...
THE NOT SO GOOD
For six and a half years, I've pretty much kept this stuff to myself, with an occasional chat with some trusted friends. Much of what I see on the negative side comes from the hidden side of HNT. From the secrets I mentioned above. From the chats and emails I've received over the years. And the mind-numbingly repetition of words and phrases, used from woman to woman...
  • I am disappointed in the number of people that never "got" what HNT was. Even up to the last days. I question if most of these people ever glanced at the guidelines (see that tab at the top of my blog--"HNT Guidelines"?). The current attempts to keep HNT going appear to be spearheaded by those who don't "get" it.
  • It didn't happen a lot in the early years, but enough that it still sticks in my mind. The nasty commenters/trolls. While 99.95% of HNT comments were complimentary, those that weren't tended to be quite nasty, mean, and totally unnecessary. And almost exclusively from non-HNTers. More recently, any nastiness tended to be aimed more at blog content than HNT pics. Regardless, trolls should be strung up!
  • I really dislike the long-time lurkers that don't HNT, or worse, don't blog! There's quite a few of them, and really, they're harmless. But it smacks of hiding behind the curtain in a back-room peep show. Sneak in, get their jollies, sneak out.
  • I have an intense hate for the guys that misrepresented HNT as "theirs". That enticed new HNTers by simply saying it was a day to show boobies. With no mention/regard of the guidelines, or even about upping themselves each week. Fortunately, and to their credit, a number of women either dropped out of HNT, or altered their participation in it, when they found out the truth. Too many of them were made to feel uncomfortable, because they wanted to "fit in". Others, on the other hand, didn't really care that they'd been duped and continued on anyway.
  • I really dislike the number of HNTers (both male and female) who don't recognize the line between fantasy and reality. There's been one or two guys who have actually shown up unannounced and unwelcome on a woman's doorstep, thinking that whatever cyber-playing they've done allows them them to do that. Requires a great deal of stalking, too. And there's plenty of women we've read about who are lamenting the fact that their cyber-lover has disappeared. Probably because he's too busy taking care of his other cyber-lovers. The line shouldn't be that hard to see, and crossing it is rarely a good idea.
  • Speaking of lines--I HATE some guys' assumptions that if a woman posts some sort of classy half-nekkid (or more) picture for HNT, it's an invitation to ask all sorts of inappropriate questions or spout all sorts of juvenile comments like they were in junior high again. Or that they must accept unsolicited cock shots. We've lost so many HNTers because of that. They didn't join in on HNT to be subjected to that. There's just a common decency line that shouldn't be crossed.
  • I hate that, for some, HNT was nothing more than a meat market. There's an entire post that could be written about this rant, but I won't do that.
  • There's the guys that I call the con men. They're like pedophiles standing outside the playground, waiting with a bagful of candy for the kids. These guys put the effort into emailing HNTers (particularly new ones), seeming like "they care", and befriend them. It doesn't matter what's going on in the HNTer's lives--they've experienced it too, and are more than happy to give advize. It gives them a foot in the door, and they don't seem as sleazy, despite their ulterior motives.
  • Probably the most frustrating thing that's happened to me is the amount of misquoting and assuming that certain bloggers have attributed to me. People like to only hear/read what they want. A couple of examples:
  • The Mystery Guest spot has always been fun, and when I first started, I had MGs ready for weeks in advance. Anyone who wanted to be MG just had to let me know. After awhile, I had to make requests, and sometimes they didn't get filled. But I was never flat-out refused until one day someone questioned why I would choose her. She seemed offended that I would ask her to participate. Like I should have asked her much earlier. I was flabbergasted. She assumed I had some sort of hidden agenda going on. After awhile, it became apparent that she had other issues with HNT in general, in spite of her continuation...
  • I've been accused of having a bias against "sex bloggers". Nothing could be further from the truth. This was based on a post I made a couple of years ago that far too many HNTers considered themselves "sex bloggers", and I still hold to those thoughts. But I never, ever said that I disliked them. Didn't matter. Word got out, primarily from one person, that I didn't want "sex bloggers" involved in HNT. In reality, if she felt there was some sort of bias against certain "types" of HNTers, then it was her own insecurities that told her that. To this day, I don't know where that came from--it wasn't me, and I don't recall seeing anything like that in the community.
  • I've been quoted as saying that I didn't care if someone took over HNT after its retirement. Wrong. Never said that. I said that I didn't care if people continued to get half-nekkid on their sites (who am I to tell someone what they can/can't do? or when?), and would hope they would, but that HNT was officially retired. Still holds true.
  • There's been instances where a commenter has expressed one opinion in my comments, yet spouts all over Twitter something totally opposite. In an attempt to look "good" to the HNT crowd (ah, those pesky Twitter screenshots that someone keeps sending me...).
  • There's plenty of guys whom I wish never found HNT. They offered nothing of value to it. They caused all sorts of strife for many. They had a super "ick" aura about them. Many of you can come up with your own list. That doesn't include the many followers here, or at OHNT, that came from porno sites. Yes...OHNT has been listed on a couple of porno link sites. Ick.
So there you go. Probably the last thoughts I'll post about HNT. I hope. Actually, there's one more--some of you have said on your blogs that you'd like to keep getting half-nekkid. I'm all for that! But don't wait for a specific day to do it! If you have a post where nekkidness fits, post it. If you want to do some sort of daily/weekly series, do it. Many of you already embraced this concept before HNT's retirement. Break free and get half-nekkid whenever you like!

P.S.--Since these are MY views and opinions of the past 78 months, and HNT is retired, and I'm not really interested in your views and opinions on this, I'm not taking comments. Havaniceday!
