Friday Fill-Ins: #152 and lots of other stuff...

I was relegated to the kiddie's table again this year. Frankly, I preferred it. Sat with the 4 grandchildren, S3 and BIL3 (even though they were hosting this year). It was good to hear their stories about high school and college. And the ridiculous drama going on at both. Ooh!!! I found out that N1 is a Mac convert! Slowly, but surely, world domination....
A strange thing happened at dinner... Since I'm now watching how much/what I'm eating, I resisted the urge to go back for seconds (though turkey would have the only thing I could have had again). I left their house feeling comfortably full, and wasn't in need of a nap! Who'da thunk it??
Also avoided the urge to camp out at Wally World at 3AM, though the urge really wasn't there. Hope all of you who braved the crazies were successful!
Speaking of crazies--it's all Christmas music, all day around here. Listening to Dean Martin singing Rudolph at the moment. Anyone else want to go crazy??
Another big football weekend in Montana. The University of Montana will be hosting South Dakota State in the first round. The Griz were awarded the #1 seed in the playoffs as the only team in 1-AA (I hate the term FCS) to be undefeated this season. So as long as they continue to win, they'll host until they head off to the championship game! Carroll College is also hosting this weekend. They will meet the MidAmerica Nazarene Pioneers (Kan.) in quarter-final action. Both Montana teams are favored, so it should be a good weekend!

Don't forget about the themes for December! You can click on each theme up there at the top of my sidebar. Let me know if you have questions!
I was up FAR too long last night watching old Stan Kenton and Buddy Rich videos on YouTube. Yeah--I need a life. But for a jazz musician, there's nothing quite like it. One of the things about Buddy Rich is that he was such a hard-ass to play for. He demanded absolute perfection (from himself, too!) every night. Part of the lore of his band was that someone had taped a tirade of his from his tour bus after a particularly poor performance by his band. Found that recording on YouTube, too! A warning--this is NSFW!!! I mean, this guy makes Richard Pryor's language sound like Mary Poppins! If you think that being on the road as a musician is a cushy job...take a listen!

And...here we go!

1. Wait! Wait, don't forget the Ovaltine!
2. The "Messiah" will be followed at once by the "Nutcracker".
3. The trouble is lurking just around the corner.
4. Sometimes my mind wanders many miles away.
5. With a faint pop the first of the bubble-wrap started to give way.
6. Black Friday sounds like it should be shadowy and ominous.
7. And as for the weekend, tonight I'm looking forward to catching up, tomorrow my plans include the Griz and Saints on TV and Sunday, I want to take my last breaths before the symphony work starts up!

Be sure to check out the other FFIers!

New Toy HNT

As I mentioned last week, I ordered a shiny new toy (thank you, Vixen, for going there...). I broke down from the beating I'd been taking from Verizon to upgrade, and between the sale they had going, and my upgrade credit, ordered myself the new Droid by Motorola! It sounds like Verizon and Apple are pissy again, so who knows when the iPhone will ever reach Montana... This is pretty cool though. It's all based on Google's Android OS, so I'm automatically synched to Google Maps, Google Mail, and all the assorted contacts and bookmarks. It also plays well with Facebook. It's sleek, it's pretty, and now I'm one of the cool kids!! So this is me, with my Droid, taking a picture of me taking a picture of me with the Photo Booth app on my work computer. Confused?

Happy Birthday to you!
Happy Birthday to you!
Happy Birthday to you, dear Mystery Guest!
Happy Birthday to you!

This week's MG/birthday girl is the lovely Coy Pink! If you haven't done it already, be sure to stop by and wish her a Happy Birthday!

Some wonderful pictures over at "...the Other HNT" this week! Be sure to stop by and express your thanks to your fellow HNTers!! Definitely NSFW (as usual...)
I got a request from Molls over at "Neamhspleach". She's been working with a photographer, and requested I post the following for him:
I am working on a Photo project titled, "Sex is a Weapon". I will be shooting in DC and NY. You can see some of my work at http://eatthecakenyc.viewbook.com

This project will directly address sex and sexuality. Some of the images will be meant to challenge the observer, some of the images will be meant for me to challenge myself (take myself out of my comfort zone), and challenge people's notions of sexuality and intimacy.

My influences for this are Mapplethorpe, Newton and Richardson.

By now, you should have noticed the THEME ALERT up on my sidebar. You can click on them to find the details of the December themes. If you have any questions, email me! For whatever reason, the second theme seems difficult for people to grasp!

Year's Favorite HNT '09

Dec. 31st - This is your chance to show off which HNT that you posted this year is your favorite! Not someone else's HNT, but your own. And tell us why it's your favorite! Newbies are encouraged to do this as well, even if you've only posted a handful. It can be your favorite for many reasons--because of the circumstances, or because you had "help" taking it, or because you're smiling--whatever... But most important, it's got to be one of YOUR HNTs.

Three Christmas Wishes HNT '09

Dec. 24th - When I first started this in 2005, it was such a great hit that people insisted that I do it again. And so it continues. The premise--choose three bloggers/HNTers to receive your Christmas wish. The wish can be from the heart, or humorous, or fantasy. There's no limitations. Other than the three bloggers chosen should be ones that aren't necessarily close friends. The reason being that you'll probably be sending that person a card or gift in real life anyway. And to avoid being #4 in a particular person's "circle of three", when you thought you were #1 or #2! Anyway, I hope you all give this some thought! The biggest complaint I hear about this theme is that it's so hard! Good!

Edit (from 2005) - To avoid the hassle of having to take HNT pics with holiday plans, families getting together, and all the other things getting in the way, we will suspend HNT this week. INSTEAD, in the spirit of Christmas, I'd rather see this--pick three HNT/blogger participants, but only three. And then tell the world what you'd get them for Christmas. To make this work, don't pick three people that you might normally send a card or a gift to anyway. Pick three people that you may have just met, or have been following for awhile, or found through other blogs.

This can be serious, humorous, from the heart, or from the mind. Hopefully this will prevent some sort of "gift guilt reciprocation". One last thing--when you post a comment like you would for HNT, just list your three people. That way someone who might not expect something from you will know to take a look.

I apparently have confused people. This is how it will work:
  • YOU will pick 3 fellow HNT/bloggers.
  • YOU will choose ones that you aren't necessarily close to, since you'll probably be doing separate Christmas wishes for them anyway. So BFD won't pick Vixen, Vixen won't pick Roxie, Hubman won't pick SoVix, etc....
  • YOU will tell us what you're going to get them for Christmas, if you had the means to do so.
  • YOU will do all of this on YOUR site.
  • YOU will comment here to let us know that you've put up your list, and to whom you're gifting.
  • YOU will comment to, or email, the recipients to let them know you've listed them, so they can come to your site and see what they'll get.
  • (optional) - YOU will post a picture of each gift, if that's possible.
  • WE will got to your site and see how generous you are to total strangers.
  • WE will also get to reap the benefits of a HNT pic, should you decide to post one (many of you apparently are much more organized than myself
If you want to get a feel for what I've done in the past, go here, here, here and here.

Christmas Tree HNT '09

Dec. 17th - The premise here is fairly simple. I want to see your half-nekkidness with your Christmas tree! If you don't do a tree, then something else that's Christmas-y. If you don't do Christmas, then something symbolic from your holiday celebration. If you don't do anything at all for the season, then regular half-nekkidness is certainly acceptable.

But I really want to see your Christmas trees!

Two Outta Three Ain't Bad...

...(thank you, Mr. Meatloaf!)

I froze my jujubees last night to watch the championship football game. We showed up well over an hour before kickoff, and still ended up in the temporary bleachers in the endzone. Still, it was fun to experience high school championship spirit. Unfortunately, it came from the other team's fans. I was sorely disappointed in what passed for "spirit" from my alma mater. Whereas the other team's fans packed their bleachers on the other side, and were rarely ever quiet (and actually cheering with the cheerleaders!), the home team could barely even be noticed to be there, even though there wasn't an empty seat to be found. Students and parents alike. Not until it was too late in the 4th quarter did they make any decent noise. Was it because they expected their team to win (going for their 4th straight championship, and 34th win in a row)? I think not. The other's fans seemed to be a classy operation, making it almost a home field atmosphere for their team. Our fans seemed very rag-tag, unorganized, and unaware of what was expected of them. And for the record, their football team was very much the same. They lost the game, 28-14, and were totally outplayed throughout most of the game. Maybe it IS too easy to rest on your laurels. But this year's champions played like they wanted it!
Fortunately, all was not lost for the weekend. Carroll College annihilated Dickinson State, 59-7, in the first round of the NAIA playoffs. It wasn't a pretty sight. They led 31-0 at halftime, which was convenient, as it allowed me to watch the Griz on a different channel without feeling guilty for not watching the full game. The Saints will host another playoff game next week. GO SAINTS!!
As for the Griz, the game started out slowly (the score was actually 2-2 at the middle of the 2nd quarter!). It's frustrating, but it's the way the Griz generally play. The second half is when they shine, and that's exactly what they did. They beat the Cats, 33-19, and completed their undefeated season. They are most likely to receive one of the top 2 seeds in the playoffs, meaning home field advantage until the championship game. GO GRIZ!!

Friday Fill-Ins: #151 and other stuff...

The biggest football weekend in Helena starts tonight! The Class AA State Championship is being hosted by my old high school, playing the long-time arch-rival (and only other real powerhouse over the past 2-3 decades) CMR Rustlers from Great Falls. I'll be at the game, freezing my privates off. Fortunately, it won't be bitter cold, but I've lost some of my insulation over the past couple of months, so I'll feel it... Then tomorrow, Carroll College hosts Dickinson State from North Dakota in the first round of the NAIA playoffs. At the same time, the Griz will be in Bozeman, trying to complete another undefeated season, and earn a top two seed for the FCS playoffs. All in all, a great beginning of a long week of football. Woohoo!
I've been wondering if I've pissed some people off, or if my breath is funky, or what... I've tried to initiate some chats or emails over the past week, and I'm not getting any response (I don't want to hear anything from you, Moose). I understand that many people are busy, but geez... If there's a reason, I'd sure like to know!
I hate to harp on the good news, but it keeps getting better. I checked with the hospital regarding what's covered under "100% adjusted". Apparently 100% means 100%! Anything having to do with my hospital visit have been written off. And that is a HUGE relief. The health clinic is another story. I'll be paying them directly. And while it's nothing like the hospital bill, it's still a significant chunk of money that I don't really want to part with. Especially when I checked their bill yesterday and found I was double billed for my flu vaccination! At $56 a pop (between the shot and the administration of said shot), I don't want any more than just the one!
Knowing now that I don't need to squirrel away every penny I find, I succumbed to Verizon's pressure to upgrade. New toy will be delivered today has arrived!! More on that later!
I'm gearing up for Christmas music all day, every day starting the day after Thanksgiving. Pray for me...
I spaced out the Friday Fill-ins until I saw it on BFD's site. Oops!

And...here we go!

1. We need to take ourselves far less seriously.
2. Someone texted me yesterday and it made me smile.
3. If you want to meet me in Nashville, let me know.
4. Zombies are cooler than vampires because they can do their thing day or night.
5. Massachusetts has a proposed 5% sales tax on elective cosmetic surgery; I think it should be based on how vain the patient is.
6. Family makes for a happy holiday.
7. And as for the weekend, tonight I'm looking forward to state championship football, tomorrow my plans include watching the Griz manhandle the Cats and Sunday, I want to figure out how to use my shiny new toy!

Go check out the rest of the FFIers!

Lotsa Tracks HNT

THEME ALERT!!! First things first...I can announce the December themes!! We've been doing this since the first December of HNT, and it seems to work out well! I'll have links to the specifics over on the sidebar by this weekend, and I'll make constant mention of them. There always seems to be someone who misses the themes, so feel free to mention them on your own sites too! The themes/dates:
Thursday, Dec. 17th will be the Christmas HNT
Thursday, Dec. 24th will be the Three Christmas Wishes HNT
Thursday, Dec. 31st will be your Year's Favorite HNT
Be sure to check back by the weekend for the details of each!
I mentioned that over the weekend I spent time adding music to my iPod. It's been awhile since I've done it, and I've gotten bored with a lot of what was loaded on it. And that doesn't even include the 800+ Christmas songs on it!

I opted for just the stuff that wouldn't be classified as "classical", jazz, soundtracks or comedy. In other words (for me), rock and country. And since I've only bought a handful of CDs in the past couple of years, it was "older" rock and country. I tried to pick at least one track from each disc to add, but after finding so much crap, I opted out of that. But I still went through every one of them to see what might be worth adding!

As I was pulling CDs off the rack, I started thinking about the incredible amount of money I've spent on these. I've never actually counted how many I've got, but I estimate 1500 would be on the low side. Being extremely conservative and estimating $10/CD (due to sales, freebies and discounts), I've spent between $15-20K on my music. Most likely more.

I'm hoping to get some inventory software soon. Complete with a bar code scanner which will go out and find all the necessary info (much like most music players do these days). If and when that happens, and I take the hours that would be involved, I'll let you know the final tally. In the meantime...here's what two rows of the rack behind me look like when not on the rack. That's only as far as Emerson, Lake & Palmer (yes, they're alphabetized, by genre...). There's another 10 rows on that rack. Plus a second rack that's just a bit smaller with my classical music. The Christmas music gets its own rack in the back room. I'm embarrassed to let you know that there are just as many LPs sitting in storage. Is there some sort of intervention for people like me?

"The curve of your hips
Is stuck in my mind
The taste of your lips
So sweet that I find
Myself lost in the thought
Of our next embrace
I see now I'm caught
Without even a chase"

This week's Mystery Guest should be easy to spot, but just in case, come back Thursday afternoon to find out who it is!

Another MG that wasn't too terribly difficult to spot! If you missed her, go find Emmy, and see what she looks like from the other side!

Money, football and music

If you didn't catch the good news in my last post, go check it out. While I'm totally and completely thrilled by that news, I find I have mixed feelings about it. I fully expected some sort of financial relief, but certainly not 100%. And that's put me into the mindset of wondering if my life is so pathetic that they looked at my paperwork and just took pity on me. I might have expected a 100% adjustment if I was homeless, or a transient, or had a household of 8 kids expecting to be fed each night. On the other hand, this is private institution that understands that health care costs are out of control, and know that their costs can easily be covered by a plethora of sources. I do find it ironic that if I did have health insurance, I'd be paying off the deductible and co-pays for years. Makes one question if one should have health insurance or not... BTW--no government agencies were harmed or offered to help in this episode.
Of course, I'm not totally off the hook. Bills have been coming in from other staff that were involved. I need to talk with the hospital's business office to figure out what I DO have to pay. I'm thinking that I've got about $1600 of doctor's fees that I'll have to pay off. And frankly, I'll be happy (relatively) to be able to do that. I don't want to think of myself as a freeloader.
I have been pretty quiet about my football teams this season, letting their records speak for themselves. However, playoffs are coming up (hey, big colleges...that's how WE determine our champion!), and it's time. So...
  • You'll notice that Peeman has returned to my header. That can only mean one thing--the Grizzly/Bobcat game (or Cat/Griz game if you're from Bozeman)! One of the longest running active rivalries in college football. The 109th "Brawl of the Wild". This game always has FCS playoff implications for the Big Sky Conference. The Griz won their 12th consecutive conference title (and an automatic bid) with their win yesterday, but if the Cats win, they could earn an at-large bid. As for the Griz, they will be making their 17th straight appearance in the playoffs. They also have more total wins in this decade than any other college football team, NFL or CFL. That's better than Oklahoma, Florida, or USC! I can't imagine that there's a high school team who could come close, either. GO GRIZ!
  • Carroll College had the weekend off in preparation for the NAIA playoffs. They will be hosting at least the first round game, and most likely throughout the playoffs until the championship game. They've be ranked #2 all season, behind the University of Sioux Falls (whom they lost the championship to last year). Still, they've won 5 of the last 7 national championships, and are fully expected to make it to the game again this year. Additionally, they are also in the top 5 of the teams with the most wins of the decade! GO SAINTS!
  • The Helena Capital Bruins will host the AA state championship game Friday night. They are undefeated in four seasons, and are going for their 4th consecutive state title. They have a current winning streak of 32 games (a state record), and have some ridiculous record over the past six seasons of 62-2 or something like that.
All in all, it's good for football in Montana!
A fun thing happened at the Griz game yesterday. They have a promotion that has been running for 2 seasons--kick a 45-yd field goal and win $10,000. Most of the time, it's someone who's lucky to get it 20 yards down the field. Until two weeks ago. A UM student came on, kicked it, and easily cleared the crossbar. Nice story, right? Until those who were to pay him found out that he was a former high school kicker two years earlier. And in one of those small-print-but-not-really-hidden clauses, you could not have played competitive football for at least five years. In spite of the fact that he hadn't kicked a football in two years, and didn't have the opportunity to practice. So the guy was SOL.

Public outcry was huge, so a statewide car dealer offered to put up the $10,000 if he could go out and make the kick again. And he did! Read the story here, and check out the video link on the page. It's ugly, but it works!
While watching football all weekend, I decided I needed some new music for my iPod. I had commented on someone's site about getting bored with the music I had and considered just deleting everything and starting from scratch. Well, I didn't delete, but started pulling CDs off the shelf. Good lord, what was I thinking when I bought some of these things?? I've gotten through about 350 CDs (out of about 1500), and there's probably 20 that I've never listened to, maybe about 5 whom I've never heard of, and a half dozen still shrink wrapped--and I haven't bought a CD in about 5 years! I blame my years as a CD store manager, but still... On the good side, I've added about 1 GB of music, and still have much more to go!

Friday Fill-Ins: #150

It's been a few weeks since I've played, but I'm back. I think I've pretty much decided to quit TMI--seems like it's dying a slow death anyway. But this one is a nice diversion!

And...here we go!

1. The last band I saw live was a five-member, dueling piano band where all the members played piano when they weren't playing other instruments with M after the Elton John/Billy Joel concert in Indy this past May.
2. What I look forward to most on Thanksgiving is football, family and properly portioned servings of dinner. (if you don't celebrate thanksgiving, insert your favorite holiday)
3. My Christmas/holiday shopping is often done on Christmas Eve, if not actually on Christmas Day.
4. Thoughts of a certain someone fill my head.
5. I wish I could wear taffeta.
6. Bagpipes fascinate me.
7. And as for the weekend, tonight I'm looking forward to maybe hitting the downtown art walk, tomorrow my plans include watching the Griz and Sunday, I want to shake things up a bit!

Ultra HNT

Well, there's good news and bad news... The good news is that I was able to drink two Michelob Ultras with dinner. The bad news is that I drank two Michelob Ultras with dinner. It was good to meet up with the girls (D & K). I think the last time was in early August. Before all the fun happened. I caught thirteen levels of hell from the both of them, because I didn't let them know until almost a week out of the hospital. I know--it's sorta sad when you guys find out before flesh-and-blood friends do. That's OK, they were just glad I was still around!

We played keno (badly), we gossiped, they drank beer. I would have too, but everything I read said that if I was going to drink, I had to do it while eating a meal. Makes sense. But with apologies to Vixen, TUG and Southern Girl...Ultra is vile stuff. Maybe I'm a beer snob after drinking primarily microbrews, but DAYUM! The bar we were at didn't have the Ultra Amber, so I'll still give that a chance. Otherwise, my beer drinking will be stuck at Miller Lite. It's painful to even admit that...

As I said, the keno was getting expensive (read: we were losing money) until the very last game we played, where I won enough to actually go home with $20 extra in my pocket! The business office at the hospital will be happy to hear that! To celebrate, I had K's husband take our picture (D on the left, K on the right). What I notice, other than the horse that appears to be centered on my head, is that my face looks noticeably thinner, and that I'm beginning to grow a turkey neck. I suppose I can handle that... (be sure to click! BTE--it's truly SFW)

“Beauty is a form of genius - is higher, indeed, than genius, as it needs no explanation. It is of the great facts in the world like sunlight, or springtime, or the reflection in dark water of that silver shell we call the moon.” -- Oscar Wilde

The beautiful Mystery Guest will be revealed late Thursday afternoon. Be sure to stop back and find out who she is!
The lovely MG this week is Southern Girl over at "From There To Here"! Stop by and say hi!

As we get closer to Thanksgiving, it's time to remind everyone about the three themes for December. It may seem early, but it's better to get everyone thinking about it ahead of time! Look for details with next week's HNT, as well as the theme alert at the top of my sidebar. Those of you who have been doing this for awhile--it's going to be the regular December themes. Why fix it if it ain't broke?

We'll see what happens...

I've made mention on numerous occasions about my two HS classmates that I get together with about 4-5 times a year, usually to celebrate a birthday, or to just have a few drinks and play keno. Well, the oldest one's bday is Wednesday, so we're going to get together tonight (schedules, you know). It will be the first time since the end of August that I'll drink a beer (if you can call Miller Lite a beer...). Perhaps Michelob Ultra. In any case, I'm a little nervous, but it will be interesting to see what it does to my glucose level. Don't worry--I'm limiting myself to two beers. That's what "they" say I can drink. And the girls will certainly make sure I don't go over that. This is one of those "changes" that I have to make. Is it possible to nurse 2 beers over a three-hour time span???

I bought tickets to something online for something over in Missoula at the end of January. I probably wouldn't have bought them, but they are front row seats. Yes, my ticket mojo is back! I'll tell more later, but right now, I need to find a date. Moose...this is one you'd want to go to...

I have a doctor's appointment on Thursday. I'm curious to see what the doctor thinks of my current condition. And I need refills on my blood pressure and cholesterol meds...

Nada

It's been 4 days since my last post, and I've got nothing. Other than watching a lot of football all weekend. Please note the win-loss records of my teams over there.   ----->

Trojan has slipped back down to 33rd over the weekend.  I'm not sure what I can do (or she can do...) to get over there and vote.  You can vote daily, and you can vote from different computers.  The contest runs to the end of the year, so keep visiting and help a former HNTer out!

Pricey HNT

I promise that this will be one of the last times I dwell on the diabetes. It's been 4 weeks (already?!?) since things went downhill fast. My daily routine has been rescheduled and I think I'm getting a handle on it all. I've found out how quickly the supplies run out. I've found out that poking one's fingers to get blood to test gets really old (and no, I can't do it in my arm). I've found that eating three sensible meals a day actually DOES fill you up!

But most of all, I've found that none of this comes cheap (though I am getting much of it for free!). Under the prescriptions and alcohol swabs and syringes and whatnot, you can see my hospital bill. Granted, many of you have had far higher bills, but most likely have had insurance pay a major chunk of it. Not me. You can click on the picture to find out the current amount owed (not including a second bill for extra labwork...). I'm pointing at it right there. I do find humor in the sentence that says "all balances are payable in full within 30 days". We'll see how that goes! Be looking for a PayPal button in my sidebar in the near future...

"Well my sweet baby wears fishnet stockings
When she starts a rockin' there ain't no stoppin'

Singing wop bop a doo dop fishnet stockings
Shoo wop a doo dop when she's rockin'
Bop bop a doo dop there ain't no stoppin'
Rockin' with my baby in her fishnet stockings

Well she's got a pair in pink
She's got a pair in red
When she puts the black ones she makes me lose my head..."

"Fishnet Stockings"--Stray Cats

This week's Mystery Guest will be revealed late Thursday afternoon. Be sure to come back to find out who it is!
Not too much of a mystery who this week's MG is...  Of course, it's Vixen, with the real finale to her series!   Go check her out if you haven't already...or even if you have!

Have you seen the previews for the new Jim Carrey movie, "A Christmas Carol"? I'm sure it will get great reviews, but I'm NOT a fan of this new style of movie, that relies so much on computer generated imaging (CGI). I didn't like "Polar Express" for the same reason. Too much reliance on digital perfection, and not enough on good, old-fashioned, hand-crafted movie-making. (too many hyphens?)
Even though Halloween is over, enjoy this wonderful movie trailer...

Different sort of TMI

If you're not interested in my diabetes story, skip this post...

I hadn't intended to put any of this down here, but enough of you have asked me about it that it's easier to do this way. Mainly...how did you get diabetes? And how did it happen so quickly? The simple answer--I was overweight, ate poorly, and didn't exercise. As to how--I'm not sure, but once I thought it was a possibility, I couldn't have done things more wrong to prevent it. Here it is, somewhat chronologically (and bulleted!!):
  • Remember this HNT? I have heard from others that 'someone they knew' got diabetes after some sort of bodily trauma, such as breaking a leg. I don't know if my puking adventure triggered it, but I do know that I quit the Diet Coke cold turkey after that day, and the desire to drink the entire Missouri River started soon after.
  • Early to mid-September...I started noticing that I really was drinking excessive amounts of water. On the plus side, my knees were feeling better. I figured the water was simply flushing out any toxins in me. And any good diet says you're supposed to drink lots of water. Unfortunately, it also led to getting up multiple times during the night to pee, which in turn was making me quite tired during the days (at least, that's what I thought was the problem).
  • Around the 17th, I had S3 pick me up after delivering the equipment truck for the upcoming symphony concert. I mentioned to her about the thirst and the peeing, and she harassed me into promising to go see a doctor about it. I told her I'd do it as a bday present for her, but it would have to wait until after the concert.
  • Concert on the 24th. By this time, the dryness in my mouth was getting out of control. I had to have a quart of water with me onstage to take a sip before playing. Because I had no spit. And my tongue was sticking to the roof of my mouth. And I was SO tired afterwards for the tear-down. Thank God I had a crew to help!
  • Towards the end of the following week, I go to the county health co-op to see someone. The earliest they can get anyone to see me would be Thursday, Oct. 9th.
  • The week of Oct. 5th...I work on Monday, but tell the boss I don't know how long I'll stay, because I'm exhausted, and a little light-headed. But it passes, and I finish out the day. Tuesday, I feel a little more exhausted, and call in sick. I spend the day mostly napping and peeing. I don't even feel like scoping out the Boobie-Thon site. I do get to the store to buy groceries and stock up with fruit juices. And ice cream. Because they sound like they'd taste really good. And they did! I also bought some Jolly Ranchers to suck on. If my dry, pasty mouth was going to taste as funky as it was, it might as well taste like those (please note the very sugary things I was consuming here...). My voice was also changing. Almost squeaky. And I came to the realization that I getting rid of far more liquid than I was putting in. I was pretty close to the understanding that I was not in a good way.
  • Wednesday and Thursday were pretty much the same as Tuesday. Stay at home, nap, drink fruit juice and suck candies. But I did have a doctor's appointment Thursday afternoon, so off I went. After talking with the doctor, a nurse came in to test my blood sugar level. Where "normal" range is between 70 - 130, mine was at 473. Meaning that my body wasn't making enough insulin to allow the sugar in my blood to get to the blood cells. And there's another test that says it's been this way for awhile. Basically, all the sweet stuff over the prior few days was just too much for my system to handle. The doctor declared me to have type II diabetes, prescribed some oral meds, and sent me home. Along with a blood glucose meter.
  • Friday rolls around, and I'm still totally exhausted. I call in sick again, and this time the girl who answered the phone at work could hardly recognize my voice. The rest of the day was spent in bed, rather in front of the TV. The phone rang a few times, but I ignored it. Until someone calls me 5-6 times in a row. It's my BIL3. I don't even know what time it is, though I imagine it's sometime after 5PM. He tells me he's coming over to take me to the hospital. I argue, but he's a physical therapist, so I figure he knows when I might need to go. Plus, I know that my sisters are with him, and there's no way they're going to let me get away with that. By this point, I've been peeing off and on all day, and hadn't had anything to eat since Wed. night (assuming they wanted a fasting level for the blood tests). He said I had the look of death. I don't know that I'd argue with that...
  • My first 12 hours at the hospital are still a blur. I remember that I was too weak to even take my clothes off to get into one of those sexy hospital gowns. I remember that my eyes were shut the entire time in the ER because the lights were so bright (to me, anyway). I remember almost crying because my mouth was SO dry, and they wouldn't even give me an ice chip until they were done checking me out (and I would have married the very attractive nurse that gave me my first one on the way to ICU). I remember being poked and prodded once an hour that first night. I remember the smiling lab technician who came to draw blood at 5AM. Every single morning... With a smile on her face! That's just wrong.
There's plenty more I haven't mentioned. The loss of 50 lbs from the end of summer to the first doctors appt. Some of that has been put back on, thanks to the fluids they gave me. The jeans I'm wearing these days are 6 inches skinnier than the ones I wore before the summer. Applying for Medicaid is the epitome of red tape. I was told that my paperwork wouldn't even get looked at for two months. And my handwriting seems to have changed a bit. Which is weird. But the best news so far? I've noticed that my eyesight is slowly improving!

So that's it. Still learning alot. I'll keep you posted! Thus ends my TMI~

Oh, one more thing! I have found a new appreciation for broccoli and cauliflower (though I'm sure it'll get old sometime down the road), and sugar-free Jello! Still working on liking whole wheat bread, though...

Another thing--I was so out of it during that last week that, for the first time in forever, I spaced out making my midnight call to Moose on her birthday. Good thing she's a forgiving soul!
