Musical Monday #4

It's obviously football season. Friday nights reserved for H.S. football, Saturdays for college, and Sundays for the NFL. Being so far away from any NFL city, we generally consider college football much more exciting. And Division 1-AA being far superior to big-time college games. Though the PAC-10 gets most of our loyalties.

Still, Sunday brings the NFL, and an excuse to sit on our butts and drink beer. One of the unplanned successes of the NFL would have to be NFL Films. For over 40 years, they have filmed every NFL game in every city and from every angle. They have devised new filming techniques, and now are used in a variety of non-NFL uses. They devised the concept of the highlight reel, using their vastly huge stockpile of film.

One of the most impressive things that they've done is to package some of their highlights with wonderful, brassy, testosterone-inducing, jazzy/rock music ever written. Yes, NFL Films has a stable of music/film composers that write short musical interludes to accompany the clips. NFL Films also retains some top studio musicians to perform this music in the official NFL Films recording studios. A couple of years ago, NFL Films released "Autumn Thunder: 40 Years of NFL Films Music." Ten CDs worth of the best they have to offer. Yeah, it's geeky, but it's some kick-ass music!
